2 weeks later…

Saturday 5:52 pm

The light of the midday sun cut through the trees which casted shadows onto the ground below Emberlynne’s feet. It was just before dinner and the patients were allowed outside. A sudden wave of warmth had fallen over October Hill and its usually bitter arctic fall weather.  Emberlynne and Elijah found themselves casually strolling beyond the limits of the backyard. Emberlynne was so happy to escape the usual depression of the mansion. She was tired of tip toeing around Bryce and Hart so when Elijah opted for them to sneak off she was more than game.

“I don’t know, its just one of those things I do, you know.” Elijah said scratching at the back of his head. Emberlynne considered this.

“Can you feel them change color?” She asked. Elijah just watched the intrigue that was displayed plainly in her features. Her glossy ebony hair was pulled into a ponytail and she was wearing an October Hill uniform in the color of a common rose. Her red uniformed signified that she was one of October Hill’s more violent patients and all that she shall pass should take precaution. Her Blue eyes captured his undivided attention and it was almost as if Elijah had been hypnotized.

“Well sorta. Sometimes. You know when your about to cry and there’s this mad stinging behind your eyes?” He asked. Emberlynne nodded.

“Yea, it’s like that but not all the time.” He said. Emberlynne practically inhaled all this information. It fascinated her that his eyes could change colors according to emotion, yet I didn’t seem impossible. There was a very blurry line between real and imaginary at October Hill lately.  The trees bristled and the wind blew past Emberlynne.

“This place is so insufferably boring,” Elijah complained. It was funny because Emberlynne had never heard him complain about anything. Emberlynne stepped on a fallen log and carefully walked down it length like someone on a type rope.

“Eh,” Was all the empathy she could mutter. She never noticed.

“Let’s do something,” He said. He ran a bonny hand through his silken hair and the sun glinted of his pinkish red eyes.

“Like what?” Emberlynne murmured absentmindedly.

Elijah shrugged.

“There’s a rave tonight in town a couple miles from here.”

Emberlynne looked up at him in astonishment. The Mansion kids never really got any new information of the outside world. The Mansion was always so secluded from everyone else by being so far out in the woodland mountains. He held her hand as she stepped down from the log.

“A rave?”

“It’s a big-“

“Illegal party along with illegal drugs, yea I’ve read about it.”  Emberlynne said. Elijah smiled at her.

“So you wanna go?” he asked. Emberlynne nodded enthusiastically. He smiled at this. Plans began to whirl around in his head as he thought very quietly to himself. Emberlynne let down her ponytail and as her hair fell in her face she pushed it back and looked up at him through thick eye lashes. It was some what obvious that she was becoming smitten with him. He was oblivious to her staring as he adjusted his collar in the sudden heat. He was wearing a loose black tee with some sort of band symbol on it and some old blue jeans. The two shiny studs in his bottom lip captured her undivided attention and she bit her own bottom lip. It took her a good minute to figure out that he was now speaking to her.

“What?” She asked shaking off her stupor and letting her bottom lip go.

“I said I’ll be at your room late tonight so we can sneak out,” He repeated. She nodded while her brain tried to catch up with what he was talking about.

“Right tonight.” She said. He grinned at her not fooled at all. Emberlynne felt her face heat up and she looked away. This wasn’t happening. Not to the girl who could lie bold faced to a lie detector and not get detected.

“What are you gonna wear?” he asked her, eyeing her red uniform. She shrugged.

“I have some things.” She said. Suddenly they both came to a familiar break in the forest and Emberlynne could just make out that cold granite silhouette. It was that statue. Emberlynne stopped cold in her tracks at the entrance of the clearing but Elijah caught her wrist and pulled her into the clearing.  It stood high above both of them with an eerie atmosphere of pride. Elijah stared strait at it. His iris’s turned as black as coal and his expression portrayed nothing if not a hint of boredom.

“This is where I passed out.” Emberlynne told him. He glanced down at her briefly and then back to the statue. The hand that had held her wrist tightly moved down until their fingers were interlaced and they were hand in hand. Elijah sat down and pulled Emberlynne down with him.

“This statue has been her for along time.” He said with eyes that held grave wisdom. She sat beside him but still he did not let go of her hand. Instead, he playfully fiddled with their interlaced fingers.

“Would you like to hear the story?” He asked concentrating intently on their hands.

“Yes,” Emberlynne nodded.
