Broken
I was still standing there with Cliff holding me. Waiting for George to come back, but I knew he wouldn’t. He wouldn’t come back. Even if my life depended on it.
That was how Gerard found us. I was crying my nose running, and my eyes were red. Cliff was comforting me. His eyes halfway between. He still had white outsides but his irises were still pitch black. I was holding onto him; not wanting to lose him to.
It seems like I have been crying for an eternity, but I knew it couldn’t have been more than a few minutes. I knew I had to get away from Cliff, but at this moment he is my only comfort.
Even if the demon is still within.
I knew that Gerard was very uncomfortable watching this private moment, but I didn’t care if the whole world knows that I cry. If it would help me get rid of this pain in my chest then so be it.
Apparently I'm getting my wish because the whole camp is here now. I could hear comments from the crowd.
“Is she okay?”
“What happened?”
“Is she having a mental breakdown?”
The whole time Cliff was just holding me,and growling at anyone who tried to take me away. I had to hang on because I didn’t want to lose him too, but I knew I would lose him to the demon eventually.
Soon Devon came and was able to unstick me from Cliff, but the whole time I was hanging onto his jacket. Grabbing for his hand not wanting to let go.
She pushed and pulled, and got Gerard to help. He was all too willing to help. Grabbing her hands and pulling. Finally they gave in and let me take Cliff. Gerard just gave me a look that said “This is going to go bad. I just know it” I responded by childishly sticking my tongue out. Cliff responded with a look that made me think of the phrase “If looks could kill” directed at Gerard, and then he squeezed my hand gently.
Devon walked us to the hut and set me down on the moss mattress. She then looked from me to Cliff and said “Alright so tell me what happened” She had a look on her face like she already knew, and when she saw me and him blush. She knew.
She winked at me and turning around she told the boys to wait outside the hut. It was “girl” business. Gerard looked like he would rather leave with a mass murderer than spend a few minutes alone with Cliff.
He looked at Devon like “Do I have to?” she responded with a look that made even Cliff flinch, and told them to go spend some guy time together.
Cliff looked at me his eyes still the same half, but his smile was the same. Half-smile with the dimple poking out if his right cheek. I tried to give him a reassuring smile through my tears, and he nodded and dragged Gerard out of the room.
Devon waited for them to leave and then she jumped on the bed landing next to me, and while petting Venere she asked for the “details”.
“Was it your first kiss? Is he a good kisser? Why were you crying when we found you?” she took a deep breath and also asked “What’s going to happen to you and the earth bender?”
I took a deep breath and answered all her questions “Yes it was my first kiss, and I am glad for that because it was a great kiss. His lips were feather soft against mine, and he was so gentle. It was so romantic. He was hiding behind the crevice waiting for me, and asked me if I trusted him. I responded with Yes and he leaned into kiss me. It was the best moments of my life. He was almost himself again, but then I sensed him became rigid and stiff. I looked around him and saw George!” At this she was leaning on the bed hanging onto my every word “He watched us kiss, and I watched as he cried, and ran down to the main center. I broke down into Cliff, and that was how you guys found us. End of story” She was just silent the whole time. Looking into my eyes. Wanting to ask a question, but she seemed to be holding herself back.
She finally took a deep breath and said “What is George going to do next? Are you safe?”
I didn’t know the answer to that, but I knew it couldn’t be good. “I don’t know, but it seems like it would have to have something to do with Cliff. I believe I am safe for now, but only for a few days. After that the demon will take complete control over Cliff, and he will try to kill me again” She just smiled and said
“Glad that’s not my love-life. They wouldn’t last a day. I’d kick them to the curb” We then started to gossip about boys and what a hassle they were when I remembered something.
“Where are the boys?” She looked at me like all of a sudden she was also worried.
“It’s not like Gerard to just abandon me. He would have come to the door and asked what was wrong fifteen minutes ago, and I doubt the reason he is not here would be because all of a sudden he’s such great friends with your earthbender”
“I don’t know I just know that something bad is going to happen if we don’t find them soon” We silently and slowly walked to the door afraid of what we would find.
I had to ask one question that was burning on the tip of my tongue “Why was the bell ringing?”
She just looked at me and answered like she was worried also, “The boy who attacked me yesterday. He got away” She then hung her head like it was her fault. “I felt sorry for him and loosened his cuffs. Just enough so they wouldn’t cut into his skin; I guess that when I left he knocked out the guard and escaped. It’s my fault! I should hav...” she was cut off by something that knocked into her. Launching them both over the railing. I could hear screams falling lower and lower.
I went to the edge and looked down. I could see Devon fighting with a figure who wouldn’t let go of her. I climbed onto the railing thinking to myself “I’m an idiot!” and I took a deep breath. Then I jumped!
…
I could feel the wind slashing at my face, but it didn’t hurt. Actually I felt very peaceful. I was falling, but it was an exhilarating experience. I opened my eyes and remembered why I jumped. I jumped to save my friend, and the lunatic who attacked her.
I could see two faint figures falling and crawling on each other. Trying to get the upper hand. I placed my arms at my side and plummeted towards the two receding figures below.
Upon reaching them I could see soil brown hair and ash black hair. Then a glimpse at the eyes. I saw Devon’s moss green, and holding on to her I could see somebody with smoldering brown eyes; not black! Looking closer I could see that the boy was holding Devon making sure that he didn’t let go of her no matter what.
Wait! The boy was Gerard. If Gerard is here.
Then where is Cliff?
