[POV: Oscar Piastri]
I have severely underestimated the volume of the Saunterre gene.
To be fair, Andi did warn me she got like this.
She told me before the race began — nonchalantly, like it wasn't a big deal at all — that she had a 'habit' of getting a little rowdy. She said she couldn't watch them sitting down, and that she'll probably lose her voice by the halfway point, and that if I had anything to say about it she'd send me home and bring Lando instead.
Real considerate.
She wouldn't have been so harsh if she knew who had really gone out of their way for her.
Nonetheless, I just let her get on with it all. I already figured she'd be excited, I just—
I didn't realise she meant this.
She'd been bouncing since sunrise, and the second we were allowed in, she was dragging me by the arm like we were in Disneyland. She started pointing out people she knew and slapping me every time she saw a bike she liked. We got to the track early—like, ridiculously early—and still had to hustle to our seats because she refused to be late by even a second.
By her unwavering fan-girl enthusiasm, you'd never guess she was a literal MotoGP rider.
Then, when the race started, she became the human embodiment of a pit lane siren.
As the sound of the bikes passed by, Andi, in true Andi fashion, matched their volume like it was a challenge. One second she was clutching my arm, pretending it didn't bother her that the guy sat in front of her was taller than she'd like, the next she was up on her feet, fists in the air, screaming bloody murder at riders zooming past like they could actually hear her.
"COME ON, YOU—DONKEY!! MOVE FOR GOD'S SAKE!" she bellowed, hoisting herself up on the back of the tall guy's chair. He flinched. I flinched.
She was relentless; cheering every time they came around the bend, yelling strategy to no one in particular. People were turning to look. Security two rows ahead backed off. A child behind us looked like it was going to cry.
It was like she could track every movement on the course; like she could read the race before it happened. She grinned every time a rider made a move— cheered when it worked. Her hair got messy from the wind, strands were sticking to her cheeks but she never bothered to move them.
Around they came again...
"GO WIDE, YOU ABSOLUTE IDIOT— no, NO!NOT THERE—"
I didn't breathe much the whole time; just sat there, hands in my lap, trying not to draw any attention to myself in case she redirected her energy.
The tall guy in front of her had already traded placed with someone.
Then she turned to me, furious, grabbing my shoulder with a death grip. "Did you see that line Oscar? That was disgusting." She sat back, arms crossed while she muttered: "I'd have braked later. Could've snuck through, easy."
I kept nodding like I'd been watching too; like I knew what was happening at all.
Truth was, I'd barely looked at the track once since we sat down.
