"What?" Sasha screeched. He was being blamed for the fight that happened in gym class. "Are you fucking kidding me?"
The assistant principal, Mrs. Devon, looked at him darkly. "Language, Mr. Gray," she said. "You were the first to raise your voice, the first to use profanities, the first to insult your classmate, Miss Megan Morgan. Unprompted. Based on your attitude in this meeting, I can't say I'm entirely shocked."
Sasha was pretty sure Mrs. Devon was a lesbian. She had a wife. There was no way she could sit there and blame Sasha when... "You don't understand. Is Megan in trouble too? Do you know what she called Jess and me? Do you know how–"
"I am aware of the offensive homophobic language and the... hateful propaganda... Miss Morgan was saying. She is being dealt with appropriately."
Well, what the hell did that mean?
"In a week, you and the others as well as your guardians will be required to attend a meeting the school administration will hold in order to debrief and rectify any animosity. We will be encouraging healthy discussion and paving the way for apologies. It's mandatory."
Sasha scoffed. Just great. He had nothing he wanted to apologize for. He wondered if his mother would even care about this. If she didn't, he might not be able to get her to come.
"Additionally, you have received one day of in-school suspension for instigating a physical fight and verbally assaulting a classmate."
"What the fuck?" Sasha swore again, standing up. Now this was just wrong. "Physical fight? I didn't touch anybody. Luke barely shoved Megan. She's the one who threw a basketball at my face, for God's sake!"
"Sit down, Mr. Gray," Mrs. Devon insisted, unimpressed. She wrote something down in her notebook. "When did Miss Morgan throw a basketball at your face?"
"When she called me a fag," Sasha said crossly. He was not in the wrong.
She nodded and put her pen down. She looked Sasha in the eye. "I understand where you're coming from, Mr. Gray. Trust me. But a screaming and shoving match in the middle of your morning gym class is not the way to deal with it. Everyone involved is receiving the appropriate reprimand for what they've done. I assure you that Miss Morgan is not being let off easy. I have absolutely no tolerance for homophobia and hate in my school, and I am deeply sorry for what she said to you."
Sasha softened, but looked away from her. All he said was, "Okay."
"Now is there an email address or phone number I can use to reach your mother or father?"
Sasha almost laughed. "My mother doesn't check her email. She doesn't usually pick up the phone, either, but you can try."
"And your father?"
Sasha turned to look at her again, blankly. He wondered if he should say it. My father's in prison.
He didn't need to. The entire school faculty already knew it, because his mom had made sure they knew when it happened last year. Please excuse Sasha's behaviour. We are going through a difficult time. Mrs. Devon blanched as she remembered, but she didn't say anything about it. "I'll take your mother's number, please. Be sure to let her know she will have to be here on Saturday at 10am with you."
Sasha groaned. Saturday at 10am? He was usually asleep. It was the only day he could sleep in, because on Sundays he worked all day at the pawn shop. And his mother drank herself to sleep on Friday nights. She'd still be passed out too.
"Your suspension is Friday," Mrs. Devon noted.
"Who else is suspended?"
"Miss Morgan, Miss Campbell, and Mr. Sampson."
