Henry:
Pony aims her rifle at me. "Now gimmie a freaking challenge!"
I grin.
I swing my right arm, and a copy of me appears next to me. I transfer just as the body I'm currently in is shot multiple times in the chest.
I snap my fingers as I run, since I realize it wouldn't be fair to keep using a "dead" clone. I reach for the ledge and- I feel two sharp pains impact my back, and then a spark of pain on my neck.
I swing my right arm anyway, transferring to a clone, but then I hear the sound of a throat clearing over a loudspeaker. "We have drones recording you, hotshot," says Vlad's voice. "That was a kill."
"Really?" I hear Pony's disappointed voice. "That... that was such an anti-climax. Best two out of three?" she asks.
I have to admit, I feel the same way- cheated.
"We'll play this simulation again some other time, Pony, but the other nineteen of your classmates need to take this exam, and Henry's batteries will only last so long. A victory is a victory."
I sigh. Alright, guns make a difference, lesson learned.
Pony leaves the arena, and Kendo enters.
Okay, my mind starts to cycle. Kendo can only grow her hands, so she has no means of flying, but her hands become extremely powerful, and she's a martial artist, so fighting hand to hand isn't an option. I peek over the ledge as she runs in. She turns her weapon up, and I quickly duck behind the railing of the roof as she fires. I crawl back rapidly to the far side of the roof and look down. My cap lies in the street. I only understand this translocation facet of my powers so well. I think it involves keeping an object with me for an extended period. I don't know how long, but eventually the object becomes "part of me," and I can make a clone appear near it.
I yell over the side of the roof, "C'mon! Come get me!" I duck again as a few more rounds come. I would listen for her entering the stairs so I could just transfer to a clone near my cap while she's in the stairwell, but at ten stories, I can't hear her. If I transfer now, she'll have an easy time just running around the side of the building and nailing me because I assumed she was on the stairs and she wasn't.
I run over to the door to the stairs and look under it, swinging my right arm. A clone of me appears in the stairwell.
Vlad teaches that "waiting someone out" rarely works. This means that no, Kendo won't just sit down until I come down, as that will give me time to make all kinds of plans.
My clone feeds me images of the stairwell as he and I wait for her to enter. She won't wait for me, but I can wait for her.
As I wait, I take out my rifle's magazine and put a few small beads in my pocket. Maybe, just maybe, I can use them to relocate myself like with my cap. Again, I don't know the parameters of the ability I'm exploiting here.
Yes, it occurs to me that the ability might have been deadlier if I had practiced with it with my class or Vlad all along. What do you know?
I'm teaching myself a lesson today. There's value in trusting people.
I hide near the raised part of the roof where the stairwell door is. Half of the roof is raised, while the other is down.
My clone keeps watching for Kendo in the stairwell, and she keeps not coming. Is she waiting me out, despite what the teacher said? I sometimes rebel against him, but Kendo? There's a reason she's class rep. She's obedient to a fault.
I step away from the wall and look up, and-
ZIP! ZIP! SMACK! SMACK!
"But..." I look down at my school jacket, which has two new paint splatters. I grit my teeth. "How did you even get up here?" I ask. I snap my fingers, nixing the clone in the stairwell and swinging my arm to make another on the higher section of the roof. I transfer to the clone and snap away the version of me on the lower part of the roof.
