THE EXPLANATION

Carlisle began. “I had already been changed,” he said. “I was treating a young man who had an arm cut open. It was very, very difficult to treat. I had to operate. After treating him, I examined his tests. His body temperature was fifty times hotter than an average human. I waited till he woke, then I confronted him about it.” Carlisle closed his eyes. Esme looked anxiously at him. “Carlisle, are you okay?” Edward asked. Carlisle opened his eyes and smiled slightly. “That day was the day I found out about shape shifters.” I listened intently, cuddled up beside Edward. “How do you know the necklace?” I whispered to Jacob. Renesmee was asleep across his lap. “Tell you later,” he murmured. Carlisle continued. “The young man’s name was Ken. He was dying. The surgery had failed. He told me that he’d give me something to remember him by. To remember that shape shifters were on our side. He gave me the necklace. Then he asked me to take him out to the forest. He changed...then he died in his wolf form. I’d become so close to him, I dumped it on the ground.” I felt sorry for Carlisle. But he’d seen so many people die...?

Esme began her story next. “I’d been changed,” she said. “I found the necklace in a store room. The thing was, my son loved wolves, dogs, anything to do with something on four legs!” She smiled. “I was still getting over...getting over that so when I saw the wolf necklace...it just brought back human memories. I asked Carlisle what it was. He was hesitant to tell me, so I asked him again. He told me about the shape shifters. I guess I sort of lost it when I heard about the wolves. We had our first and only fight.”

We all stared. “You and Carlisle had a fight?” Emmet said incredulously. “No way!” Carlisle grinned at him. “Yes way. The first and only fight.”

“I guess it’s my turn.” I jumped. Edward was speaking. His voice was strangely hoarse. “Edward, what’s wrong?” Jasper asked. Edward grimaced. “I guess this might be the most gruesome story. If Bella was human, she’d hurl. Maybe even faint”

“Shut up!” I growled. Edward laughed. Then he exchanged glances with Carlisle. Carlisle nodded. “Well,” Edward said heavily. “I guess it begins with my father. We didn’t live to far from the forest. My dad found the same wolf that Carlisle treated. Dad skinned it, then found the necklace. He hung it on his wall. The thing was, my father wanted my mother’s inheritance. He ordered my mother to stay in the basement for four months after we realised she had influenza. I stayed with her and quickly caught the disease. Dad wasn’t upset. I was the one other person who stood in his way of that inheritance. So when it was far too late to save either me nor my mother, Dad finally took us to see Carlisle. I confessed to him what Dad had done, and begged him not to tell the police, knowing Dad would kill my mother. Carlisle went to mum, talked to her for a long time, then came back and wheeled me away. Three days later, I was a vampire and I realised my mother was dead. Carlisle told me she’d been murdered in her sleep. She was already sick but a poison had been injected into her neck. Carlisle told me I could go home and collect any possessions I needed. I stole the necklace and the skin, then sold it to a man I met on holiday in the following decades.” I squeezed his hand. He smiled at me.

Rosalie’s sigh made me prick up my ears. “The man you sold the skin and the necklace wasn’t a stranger. It was Royce.” There was an outburst, loudest from Edward who’d jumped up. “Crap, you’re kidding?” he shouted. Rosalie shook her head. “No joke. He brought it home that night with huge inspiration. “I wanna go hunting, Rose!” he crowed. “I’m gonna be a wolf hunter!” He started laughing and he and his mates went out the next day, dragging me along.” She looked at Jake. “That’s why I hate you so much,” she said to him. Jacob looked surprised. “How has that got anything to do with me?” he asked. Rosalie laughed softly. “Because you remind me so much of your mother.” Jacob looked startled. “How do you know mum?” he choked. Rosalie pulled her knees up to her chest. “How did she die?” she asked quietly. Jacob struggled to get his words out. “She was shot by a hunter years and years ago when...” His breath was caught in a gasp. “In her wolf form, right?” Rosalie said. Jake nodded, tears brimming in his eyes. Rosalie bit her lip. “So the next day, we went to the forest. I met a woman there. She was beautiful...in her own way. I could see that. She confided in me about her shape-shifting. I was astonished, and amazed. She phased and I cried out in wonderment. There was a loud bang, then she lay dead on the forest floor. “Did the beast hurt you, Rose?” Royce chortled. “I shot it just in time!” I nodded, unable to speak. I asked him if I could walk around. He wasn’t even listening, so I ran off. I saw the necklace in his bag, turned and threw up. Then I took the necklace and ran to the cliffs. Then, I threw it as far as I could into the sea.”

If Rosalie could have cried, she would have had tears pouring down her face. I wanted to go put my arms around her, but Edward’s were so tight around me, it was hard to move. Jacob carefully slid Renesmee onto my lap, then leapt up and dived at Rosalie. “You could have stopped him!” he roared, trembling, on the verge of phasing. “You could have stopped him!” Rosalie was shaking. “I know,” she said quietly. “I’m sorry.” “YOU THINK THAT’S ALL YOU CAN SAY?” Jacob yelled at the top of his voice. “Calm down,” Carlisle said gently. Jacob collapsed against the couch. I put my hand on his shoulder. He stopped trembling and locked gaze with mine. I gave him a comforting stare. He sighed and took Renesmee from my arms. “It’s all my fault,” Edward said angrily. “I should never have given him the skin and the necklace.” “Could we please go onto the next story?” I begged. Edward pulled me into his chest. “My turn then,” Jasper said. Alice looked up expectantly. We all followed her act. Jasper began his story: “It started when I was still human. Before I left for the army, mum and dad took Caleb and I to the beach. It was a good few hours away from home, so it was a real treat for us. Caleb found the necklace. I’m not as old as everyone thinks I am. I’m younger than Rosalie. That’s why we found the necklace washed up on the shore. Caleb said he wanted it. I obliged. I didn’t particularly like the necklace anyway. Then, Caleb gave it to mum. Mum adored it and dad told me off for not giving her anything. I hated Caleb. It was childish, but I did. Then, when I left to join the army, mum gave me the necklace. Year later, Caleb came to visit me in the army and took the necklace, saying it had been our mother’s dying wish. Then, when my father died, he told me that Caleb had murdered mother, took her money and came to take the necklace. I’ve always wanted revenge ever since.” My mouth was open in shock. These stories were...horrible. Alice took Jasper’s hand. “My turn,” she said cheerily. Her face was happy, but I knew her so well, I could see the pain burning in her eyes. “I remembered this four years ago...when everything was understood about James.” I shivered and Edward’s arms tightened around me. James, Victoria and Laurent still haunted me to this day. Alice gave me an apologetic look, then continued. “I remembered that I had an older brother named Cory. He was six years older than me and was the only one who cared for me and didn’t care of my ‘predictions.’ He was upset when he heard I was going to the asylum. He visited me once, gave me the necklace. When I was changed, I left all my possessions.” “What about Em?” I asked suddenly. Emmet didn’t say anything. “What about me?” he muttered. “How do you know about the necklace?” Edward asked. Emmet grimaced. “I gave it to Caleb. I met him on a hunt. I had found the necklace. I just gave it to him.”  “So all our stories are tied together, except Alice’s and Emmet’s,” Jacob said. “I just know about it from the Quiluete legends. Wait..” He paused and looked Jocko how do you know about it?” Jocko laughed loudly. “How do I know about it?” he grinned. “I know about it because my best friend made it!”
