Chapter 4: Caleb

CALEB

"He does?" repeated about ten times before Jasper knocked the two vampires under his grip unconscious and then nodded.

"His name's Caleb. He's two years older than me and he got changed a couple of centuries ago. He sent me a letter to tell me. I told him I'd been changed too. Then he joined Maria. We're identical apart from the fact that he's got black hair."

We all took this information in incredulously. "Is Alice the only one who knows?" Carlisle asked. Jasper nodded. "I couldn't tell anyone else. Just, never really occurred to me."

Carlisle nodded in understanding. "Okay. Jasper, what are Maria's tactics?"

"Go for the unexpected," Jasper said immediately. "Have majority with an obvious tactic and go for the unexpected with the most skilled. Hundreds died in the strategy...but it worked. Seeing as I know this, she'll most likely do something really unexpected." He paused. "She also has a gift." Alice's eyes shot up. "What gift?" she asked sharply. Jasper almost smiled. "Not the nicest gift in the world but it does come in handy."

He turned to Edward. "It's like Jane's gift," he explained to us all. "Except as Jane's gift is mental, Maria's is physical."

Emmet's mouth dropped. "So while Jane gives you an illusion of pain, Maria gives you real pain?" he yelled in shock. Jasper shrugged. "Pretty much."

"Wait," I said suddenly. "If Maria's gift is physical, I can't block it. I can only block mental gifts." Jasper's face looked terrified. "Well, crap, looks like we're dead," he muttered. "Not entirely," Alice said, coming over to me. "Maybe Jasper and I can help Bella try and block physical gifts?"

I sighed. "It's worth a shot." Alice smiled broadly. "Good, we'll start working on it tomorrow. Meanwhile, Jacob..."

Jacob looked up from his pizza to her.

"...I need you and Jocko to come here often enough so you know the info that's going on and can send it to the pack."

Jacob nodded. "Sure, we can do that. Jocko turns thirteen in two weeks. By then he'll be old enough to phase."

Sorry 'bout the short chapter guys but I want to hold a bit of suspense...
