A NECKLACE
Jacob and Jocko left to inform the pack. Alice took me to one side. "The only real test to see whether you can block physical gifts is for me to either see your future or Jasper to change your mood and see if you can try and block it."
I nodded uncertainly. Alice smiled. "I'm sure you can do it Bella," Jasper said from the doorway. Alice closed her eyes and I threw my shield back on. Alice sighed. "You're going to destroy the motorbike?" she said with raised eyebrows. "What?" I shrugged. "It holds bad memories!" Jasper sniggered. Alice glared at him. "You need to make your shield stronger," she said. I nodded, and thought of a large, luminous light, stretching around my body. Alice frowned now. "I can still see what you're going to do," she said. Then she grinned. "But it's starting to get fuzzy. Keep working on it, Bella!"
We worked on it for another three hours until Renesmee came up to me and stated she'd finished all the books I got her. I stared. "But I got you thirty-five!" I said. She nodded. "I know." She said it as if it was the most normal thing to finish thirty-five chapter books in six hours. "Do you remember them?" Jasper asked suspiciously. Renesmee started telling us a long recount of what had happened in The Man from Pomegranate Street and we listened, entranced till the end. "Okay," I said, before she could begin the next story. "Go ask Carlisle to take you to the video store." She looked annoyed. She hated TV but she trudged off.
I sighed. "God, this is so HARD!" I complained. Alice nodded. "My head hurts from seeing your stupid motorbike future over and over again." We both looked at Jasper who was staring out the window. "Jazz?" Alice asked. "Hello, are you even here?"
"What?" Jasper said blankly.
Alice and I sighed. Jasper looked apologetic. "Sorry, I was...distracted. I thought I saw something."
"You did," came a voice that sounded so much like Jasper's, but harder, harsher. It sounded like falling bricks and crackling kindling. I looked around. It had to be Caleb. It was like Jasper had said. They were identical, minus Caleb's black hair.
"What are you doing here?" Jasper asked tonelessly.
"Coming to see my lil' bro," Caleb said. Alice looked sour. "Hate him," she muttered. "You've met?" I guessed. She nodded. "Once. Tried to kidnap Jasper and take him to Maria." I shivered. "Ugh. They never give up, do they?"
Jacob suddenly came racing in. He saw Caleb. "I smelt a new scent...panicked and came over..." "What's going on?" someone asked. No. Renesmee. "Go," I pleaded to myself. "Go, please don't stay in case a fight brews up. Please, please, please, go!!" She looked at me and slowly backed away. I nodded at her. "Stay in your room," I mouthed. She silently tiptoed downstairs. The attic wasn't too strong so if a fight broke out here, we were all bound to fall straight through the floorboards. Suddenly Jasper was gone. Caleb's head spun round. "Where the hell did he go?" he roared. He turned on Alice. "Well, I don't know!" she snapped. I'd never seen Alice really angry. She must really hate him. Caleb ran to the window and saw Jasper waiting for him outside. "Don't get my family involved in this," Jasper growled, loud enough. "Let's finish what we started. That day when you took what was mine. You still have it, don't you?" Caleb laughed and took a necklace out of his pocket. "You mean, this?" he said in a taunting voice. Jasper snarled. Jacob gasped. Rosalie went pale again. Alice swallowed. Edward's eyes went wide, Carlisle's mouth dropped. Esme clutched his arm. "What is it?" I whispered to Alice. She was shaking. "I can't explain how everyone else knows. But they know. And Jasper isn't the only thing Maria's after."
