Rio loved Victoria.
Victoria was a spider, not a person. A tarantula, to be more specific. She found her on the side of the road one day with an injured leg while bleeding, so she picked her up and brought her home, much to Agatha's surprise.
It warmed Agatha's heart to see how Rio took care of her, even wrapped her injured leg up in a tiny bandage so the wound could heal. She bought an entire terrarium for her, filled with plants, soil, and even some small flowers, to make the environment just like the outdoors.
Even after Victoria recovered, Rio couldn't let her go now. She grew way too attached. So, she upgraded the glass container to an even bigger one, one to a size that could probably fit around five spiders to live happily.
Alice, the witch Rio and Agatha met on "The Road", had moved into the couple's spare room just a few days prior after being left without a job, hence as to why she had no way to pay her bills. She also had a spider, a tarantula like Rio's, but a bit smaller. Its name was Sam. Sam had snuck into Alice's suitcase when she had traveled to Canberra for a week around two years before. She nearly had a heart attack when she opened up her makeup bag to find that Sam had settled in quite nicely.
Alice's home for Sam was much smaller than Rio's which is why the Green Witch suggested the two spiders could be roommates. The two were nervous in the beginning, so they placed a barrier right in the middle of the terrarium to see how the spiders would react to each other's presence, who to be honest, didn't even seem like they acknowledged each other's existence.
Agatha sat in her armchair, sipping on her coffee as she watched Rio and Agatha stare intently at the tarantulas as they took the barrier away. They would walk right past each other without a second thought.
"Safe!" Rio cheered, high-fiving the protection witch who matched her energy.
"Actually, you know spiders well, could you see if you can identify Sam's sex? I always thought she was a girl but, I've never actually confirmed it." Alice asked, and Rio raised an eyebrow.
"I thought you already knew? But sure, let me just..." She reached her hand in to pick up Sam, who quickly skittered away from her and hid in a cave shaped decoration. "Guess it's a they."
Alice chuckled, "Well, they're still afraid of you. Maybe when Sam comes out, I can pick them up instead for you to check?"
Rio nodded, closing the roof and placing herself on Agatha's lap, who whined but wrapped her arms around her anyway. "Upon feeding spiders a few times, they begin to trust you pretty quickly. Soon you'll have Victoria wanting to crawl all over you." She chuckled.
Alice grinned, yawning slightly. "It's pretty late, so I'm gonna head to bed. Do either of you need anything before I go?"
Agatha and Rio shook their heads, smiling politely. "Go get your beauty sleep." Agatha said sarcastically.
Alice rolled her eyes playfully and turned down the hallway, and closed her bedroom door behind her.
Rio pressed a short kiss to Agatha's lips and smiled, "I'm so happy Victoria has a friend now!" She exclaimed, and Agatha looked into her eyes, listening to her.
"I can tell. I'm sure Victoria appreciates it too, hon."
Rio sighed, leaning her head on her shoulder, "You know, spiders, and most insects for that matter- Well, they're actually arachnids, but they still have very similar behaviors-"
Rio went on for a little while, and Agatha gave her her undivided attention, even though she didn't fully understand everything. Rio had worn herself out after half an hour, and was snoring in Agatha's lap.
Agatha lifted her up carefully, and carried her into their bedroom. She laid her on the bed and gently took off her day clothes, carefully replacing them with her favorite pajamas. Agatha got changed herself, and snuck into bed next to Rio, pulling her to her chest.
"Rio! Agatha!"
The two woke up to Alice's voice, the sunlight peeking through the blinds making them squint.
"Close them..." Rio whined, and Agatha grunted as she reached over to lower them slightly.
Alice knocked on the door, "Can I come in?"
Agatha hummed in response, and she swung the door open.
"You might want to see this."
Agatha groaned, lifting Rio up with her, making Alice chuckle. The three walked into the living room as Alice pointed to the terrarium.
"Sam's a he."
Rio blinked, looking in through the glass. There she saw Victoria, sitting in a nest that she had made, with what looked like, surprisingly, only two eggs.
"Victoria! My baby! You're going to be a mother!" She squealed, and Alice grinned,
"Sam,'s the father!"
Agatha laughed at their antics, rolling her eyes, "I guess you'll have four pet spiders now. Are you two splitting custody of the babies?"
Alice and Rio froze, looking at each other, "Yes." Rio deadpanned.
"Yes." Alice agreed in response.
"Good." Agatha nodded, "Now, you two should start getting your research in about spider eggs."
They both quickly got up and rushed out to get ready, probably to go to a bookstore, since Rio was traditional and didn't like using the internet.
Agatha picked up Señor Scratchy from his enclosure, holding him to her chest, "Should we get you a friend, too?"
