Chapter 2
We Meet

I was swimming so fast. The water around me was a blur.

'A boy. A boy. A boy my age, just, wow, he's alive! How did he know to ask me for help?!' I thought, my mind going wild
'Who was he? What's his name!? How was he still ALIVE!?'
I had to push those thoughts from my head though.
'He could be drowning at this second.'
I quit thinking and focused on the ocean around me, and swam faster.
My tail was pulsing from effort, the strong muscles in it quivering. I had to get to him, no matter what it took.
I lifted my head above the water and looked for him, he was still where he was moments ago, but now he was swimming towards me.
"Help!"
He screamed, and I smiled so widely my cheeks hurt. I noticed for just a second how beat up he looked. He was bleeding on his face, and his arm. He must have had to fight hard to escape. His blood was spilling in the water.
'No, no, no' I thought 'that will attract sharks.'
I was more determined than ever to get to him.
"I'm coming!"
I yelled back, he looked so frightened, yet so hopeful. The water around him was rough. Especially since he was so close to the reef. He got passed to rocks, but he wasn't out of the woods yet.

I ignored that and swam faster. My tan tail seemed to stand out in the blue water, but I swam towards him.
'This is going to hurt in the morning' I thought right before I hit a large, hard coral. I swam right through it. I had one small cut on my cheek, and my muscles hurt.
'Oooooowwwwwwiiiiiiieeeeee.'
It was worth the pain. I was directly in front of the boy. I had to stop and study him. I knew this wasn't the time or the place, but I needed to know what he looked like.
He had dark brown hair and blue eyes that reminded me of the ocean in the morning, he was skinny and looked strong, like he had lifted boxes at the dock of a ship.
I grabbed his hand and swam, as fast as I could towards shore, dodging coral left and right. I noticed a pointed fin coming towards us.
'Oh, I don't think so!'
The reef shark came at my tail, mouth open.
'Bad move buddy.'
I hit the shark with as much force as I could with my tail (which was a lot) and the shark went flying.
'Thank the ocean it was a small one...'
I was suddenly aware that the boy had let go of my hand and swam to the surface.
'Oh goldfish...'
I had forgotten that humans couldn't hold their breath that long. I swam up to him and grabbed his hand once again, and shot up to the surface. I heard him gasping for air, filling his lungs as quickly as he could, getting ready to go back under.
"Sorry" I mumbled. Once his breathing became steady again he turned to me.
"It's fine."
I smiled slightly then shouted
"Ah! Damn it!"
I looked down at my fin. A relatively large reef shark was holding on to my fin with its teeth.
I clenched my teeth and threw the shark off. Blood came from my fin in a thin line.
'Crud.' I thought.
I grabbed the boys hand, his eyes looking at my tail, awestruck.
We swam towards shore, keeping our heads above the water.
A small shark came at the boy and a hit it with my auburn, bleeding fin.
I stopped swimming, and grabbed the boys hand and pushed him behind me.
"What are you doing!?" He yelled "You're going to get eaten!"
I pushed him farther behind me, and turned my head.
"Get to shore." I said, my blonde hair falling into my eyes.
I dove underwater, my tail splashing water behind me.
I could see very clearly under the water. Ten years of being in it did that to you. I couldn't see any better on land then I could in the water.
So I saw all twenty sharks very clearly.
Sharks could sense blood from miles away, I knew that, but I didn't expect so many sharks to be here.
I guess the bodies have to go somewhere.
'The child...'
I closed off my thoughts. Now wasn't a time to feel guilty.
I had learned a trick when I was thirteen on my island. I had gotten in a fight with a sword fish, and I stretched my arms out and a wave sent the fish flying.
Long story short, I won.
I was going to use the same trick now.
I stretched out my arms to the oncoming sharks, and closed my purple eyes.
I felt myself shiver, and then a tingly feeling in my hands.
The wave was larger than the last time, and the sharks went tumbling backwards, hitting coral and each other, trying to escape.
I suddenly felt very tired, and my eyes closing.
'Stay awake Angelica, at least until you get to the beach.'
I turned around and swam towards shore.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When I was younger, around eight on the island, whenever I would change, I would scream the entire time. It felt like my legs were being squished together, or when I changed back, they were being ripped apart.
As I pulled myself up on to the shore, the boy with the ocean blue eyes was staring at me in wonder.
'I'm not surprised' I thought 'it's not like siren's are exactly social.'
I didn't know though, I had never met another one.
I changed back to my legs, it stung slightly, but I had gotten used to the pain.
My green dress was still on, and drying in the sun as I laid there.
After a long time of silence, I spoke.
"What is your name?"
I turned to him. The boy was just in the line of the trees, his body sinking with the shadows.
I got up, I stared him, straight in his blue eyes, and it was hard not to look away, but I was a siren and I was strong, so I continued to look into his ocean eyes curiously.
"Jonathan."
I nodded.
"Good name."
We remained silent, until he spoke.
"What is your name?"
My eyes widened.
'Brave enough to speak. I respect that.' I thought.
"Angelica."
He nodded.
I looked down at my long legs. They were bruised and bloody from the sharks, but they would heal fast.
"Why did you save me?"
Jonathan's question was out of the blue and unexpected.
"What do you mean?" I asked
I was confused, wouldn't any other person do that? I obviously wasn't a 'person' but he was beyond the rocks, he had a chance, so I just helped him along.
"I mean, why did you save me? You didn't move to save those other men.....or children."
He mumbled the last part, and I felt a pain in my chest. I pushed it down.
He surprised me at this question. I saved him, I was expecting him to thank me and shower me with kisses, not that I was expecting kisses, but why was he concerned about the other men?
It was an honorable question, and a kind one. I answered.
"Do you see the rocks your boat crashed into?"
I said, and pointed to the almost completely sunken ship.
"Well, every boat or ship that has ever passed by this island has been destroyed on those rocks."
Jonathan nodded, his blue eyes dark.
"Every man, woman...or child on those boats are supposed to die if trapped in those rocks".
I looked at him. By all law of nature, he was impossible, he was never supposed to live, but thank the ocean he did.
"But you,- you by some miracle of God were not in those rocks. When you asked for my help, I came."
I smiled at him, he looked at me curiously then smiled back, it was more like a smirk, but I took it as a smile.
I looked towards the now calmed ocean. I laid my head back into the sand and closed my eyes.
"I have another question." He said
"And what is that?" I asked, smirking.
"Aren't sirens supposed to, trick sailors into ramming into rocks by singing or you know, beauty?"
"Are you saying I'm not pretty?"
I asked mockingly. I knew the legends about Sirens, but I never did any of those things. I sang, but never with a ship near, I just watched.
"No!" He said
"I'm just saying you didn't sing or anything when my boat crashed."
I nodded, I opened my eyes and stood up, wobbling slightly on my legs.
"The legends all say 'it's the sirens fault everyone's dead'" I said
"but I have never done anything. I watch every time so if someone like you got lucky I could save them! "
I looked at Jonathan, curiously.
"What more am I to believe than the legends?"
I nodded, I was being over dramatic. I loved my island. ALOT.
"I can't complain, I have everything I would want, clothes, food, entertainment."
"Oh"
Was all he said. Jonathan walked over to me and stood closed to me. I wanted him to say more, but he didn't, we just sat there in silence. I finally decided to speak.
"So what do you want to do now?" I asked, it was all I could do to hold back a smile, the situation was so extremely awkward and silly.
"Um, well since no boats can come and rescue me I guess I will have to make a camp somewhere."
He looked sad, and I understood. He had been stolen from his home and placed here on my island. I wanted to make him feel better.
'Why?' I thought 'why does it matter what he feels?'
"Well, if you don't want to go through the trouble of making a shelter" I said "You can stay in my castle. I mean its more like a little stone building, but all the same, there is a spare room."
He looked at me and smiled. A genuine, dazzling, smile. His eyes beamed of happiness.
"I would love that, thank you."
I smiled at him,
"You are very welcome."
"You know Angelica," he said.
He said as we walked to the building,
"You're not as bad as the stories say."
I smiled and looked down at the sand. I knew right off that Jonathan was an honorable and kind man. I could trust him.
"Thank you."
