It happened so quickly. All Calum could see were glaring lights, the shriek of a horn then tyres squealing. Acting on instinct, Calum dove towards the drivers seat. Even as panic took over one thing remained firm, protect his mother.

Calum's father had died five years ago, but he had left Calum with a lasting lesson, protect and watch over Mali and his mother. So Calum tried. As the cars collided metal groaned and gave way for even more metal which tore its way into Calum. He couldn't stop the yell of pain if he tried. One particular piece sunk down through his colar bone, it would of impaled his mother had Calum not thrown himself in the way.

He could vaguely hear his mother screaming like a banshee, her voice shrill as she yelled Calum's name and calls for help. But Calum had no strength left, his whole body was breaking. Chancing a glance down all he saw was a mix-match of car colors.

Oddly, as Calum's eyes gave up the fight and were drifting closed, Calum's last throught wasn't of himself, his mother, his sister who waited at home, oblivious of her families pain. His last thought was of pale skin, lime green hair, unique green eyes, lips so red they put even strawberries to shame. Lips that wore a shit eatting grin as they look at Calum. Calum thinks he mustered a smile, but by then his eyes had slipped shut and he was gone.

That was three months ago. Now Calum stares at the headstone dedicated to his mother feeling like the world's worst failure. His father wanted one thing from him. One. Fucking. Thing. And Calum had failed.

Tears had long stopped coming, but his eyes stubbornly kept up their red tint. He couldn't go anywhere without getting a look of pity. A look he quickly came to hate. Fine, Calum didn't need anyone anyway, he camped out at their graves until the cold literally shoved him away and he was forced home.

He had even convinced himself that the super wind was his father. Shoving Calum away in disgrace because he made the ultimate mistake of letting his mother die. Calum wanted to scream. He had done all he could,he still had scars from where the cars sliced into him.

But that didn't matter. It would of been his shreded heart that killed him. And he would of been fine with that, knowing he saved her and made his dad proud. He was willing to accept death if it meant she lived. Evidently, his mother thought the same about him as she gave up her own heart for him.

As he woke up to beeping and bright white lights they told him he was lucky, that his mother was a saint and that it was down to the brilliant work of the surgeons that kept him alive as they ran their fucking tests that would kill Joy Hood but keep Calum alive. He had roared at every single one of them, but he didn't feel any better. He didn't feel any thing at all.

That was how Calum started going to the local boxing club to throw his grief onto the bag or his oppoent. Most people quickly learned not to get in the ring with him as Calum's new ability of being numb made him unbeatable.

After becoming a raging animal that would rip into anyone, everyone fled. Mali was nursing her own grief and decided that Calum needed to let out his anger some way. And this was better then street fighting, drink and drugs.

Of course, there was one person who sturbbornly refused to leave. No matter what Calum hurled at him. Calum tried. Every secret Michael had was screamed for all their friends to hear, Michael wasn't fazed. Calum would hurl anything within reach at him, but Michael didn't flinch. So Calum decided to ignore him, figuring that soon he would give up. Just like everyone else.

"There you are," Speak of the devil.

Calum closed his eyes and breathed heavily through his nose, "Piss off, Mikey, I want to be alone."

He felt Michael's body heat a seond later. Typical that he would just ignore what Calum said. "You always want to be alone recently." Michael noticed.
