♪ I've been living with a shadow overhead... I've been sleeping with a cloud above my bed... ♪
The hauntingly beautiful melody floated through the air. The crowd-dressed in formal black and glittering gold-rose to their feet. Lights dimmed. Spotlights converged.
And there he was.
MANAN.
The prodigy who redefined talent-an award-winning singer, acclaimed actor, genius engineer, and savvy businessman. But tonight, none of that mattered. Because tonight, the world finally saw the boy behind the man.
He smiled gently as he sat at the piano. Cameras zoomed in. Fans wiped tears. The press stood stunned. The hall held its breath.
"This song...was my parents' favorite," he said softly. "And the film? It wasn't fiction. It was them. This is their story."
The audience gasped. Murmurs turned to awe.
"Yes," he confirmed. "This is the true love story of my parents, the legendary Manik Malhotra and Nandini Murthy, & their Way Back Into Love."
FLASHBACK-AMonth After MANAN's 7th Birthday
One month after they celebrated MANAN's 7th birthday, Manik and Nandini went away from the chaos of their happily married life, where they were balancing their family, careers, & parenthood. They enjoyed every bit of it. But they needed some time alone together... only the two of them... MOMMY & HER POOH... so they chose their tree house: Nestled deep within the woods where birdsong reigned and wind whispered secrets through the trees; it was their heaven on earth.
Leaving MANAN with Papa Neil and Mummy Netra-and their son Naman, MANAN's partner in all adventures-they retreated to their sanctuary.
It was supposed to be a weekend of peace. Of love. Of silence.
But darkness had other plans.
Kashmira. Maddhyam. Soha.
They wanted revenge. They knew Manik would never break, so they targeted Nandini. A week before, during a client meeting, they sent a dessert-Rose Almond Velvet Truffle. Nandini's favorite. Manik hated anything with rose. But that day, the dessert looked so alluring that POOH finished it all with a sheepish grin, licking the bowl clean.
"Oops... sorry, MOMMY," he had said, giving her that adorable pout. And just like that, Nandini had fallen in love with her BABY POOH all over again.
What they didn't know was that the dessert had been laced with Odaxium, a tasteless neurotoxin designed to activate only in Nandini's system under conditions of heightened emotion. The villains never planned for Manik to eat it.
The client, under strict instructions, didn't pay attention to the change, assuming it harmless.
The Last Night-In Their Tree House
Fairy lights twinkled across wooden beams. Candles flickered against the mahogany walls. Outside, crickets chirped a lullaby.
Wrapped in fairy lights and each other's arms, they lay on the mattress spread over the floor, their bodies entwined. He kissed the constellation of moles on her back. She traced his scars like poetry.
Passion met purity. Their heartbeats raced. The poison surged. But they didn't feel it-not yet.
They returned to the swing-his favorite place. Nandini rested her head on Manik's chest, right above his heart. They sat in silence, soaking in the night.
Then she became weak.
"Manik..." she whispered, her limbs heavy.
He looked down and realized she was slipping. Seconds later, he too felt a wave of dizziness.
Realization hit like a bullet.
"It was the dessert," he said breathlessly.
She nodded faintly. "The one from last week... they succeeded after all. What... what will happen to MANAN, Pooh?"
Manik tightened his grip around her. "He has Papa and Mummy. He has Naman. He has love. And he has us. We'll watch over him... always and forever."
Nandini weakly chuckled. "They couldn't win... even death didn't do us apart. We won, Pooh. We found our way back into love."
They both said in unison, voices fading, "Always and forever."
Wrapped in each other. Whispering promises of forever. Slowly, they drifted into peaceful slumber forever.
The Morning After
The villains had tipped off the media, expecting to broadcast tragedy. They baited journalists with promises of scandal.
But the scene that unfolded before them left even the most shameless reporters stunned.
The camera zoomed in: Manik and Nandini, wrapped in each other's arms. Still. Smiling faintly. A love too pure to die ugly.
Words failed the people who lived by words.
The world didn't see a tragedy. They saw a legacy. A story of love so powerful that even death dared not touch it cruelly.
Even the villains, hidden in a room, watched the broadcast. And as the anchor broke down in tears live on air, their revenge turned into poetry. Their hatred paled in the face of such sublime love.
The sun rose to find them still there-gone, but together.
Back to Present
"My Baba and Maa taught me what love really means," MANAN said, standing center stage. "And when they left... Papa and Mummy-Neil and Netra-they were my guiding light... my brother NAMAN was my pillar of strength."
"Thanks to my young folks-as in our two Grand Maās and both Grand Paās-for being the naughty children my parents needed to deal with every day, which brought much spice into me and my brother's life. Yes, we all live together in the famous JANNAT Mansion."
"And thank you all for supporting me all the way-be it acting or singing. So I invite you to watch the movie Way Back Into Love. Thank you."
With that, he left the stage with NAMAN and NeilNetra tailing behind him...
The theme song played softly in the background.
