Seven Years later

The echo of angry footsteps rang through the marble corridors of the new haveli. Chavi's voice cut through the morning air like glass.

"Tumse ek kaam dhang se hota hai kya?" she shrieked, holding the shattered pieces of a blush palette in her manicured hand. "Yeh Paris se bhai sa laaye the mere liye! Limited edition tha! Samajh mein aaya? Yeh Amazon ya bazaar se nahi aaya tha! Kisi cheez ki kadar to hai nahi Anpadh Jahil kahin ki."

In the center of the drawing room, the woman in the simple poshak, her head bowed low, stood still like a shadow—her hands nervously clutching the edge of her odhani.

Maasa, seated on her velvet cushion, slapped her thigh with her palm. "Bindani, tujhe kitni baar kaha hai naak mein dum mat kar! Ghar chalana aata nahi, upar se itna keemti samaan tod diya! Mera Raghav kitni mehnat se kamata hai pata hai kya tujhe?"

"G..Galti... hua..m..masa." the lady uttered

Masa turned to Chavi, who was in costly chicken suit, her voice sugarcoated now, " Kyu jalti hai tu isse? Tere Bapu Sa or tere mayke me kisi ki kismat mere Raghav jaisi nahi to me kya karu? Teri behne acche kapde na pehnati to me kya karu? Isme meri ya meri CHavi ki kya galti? Itne saalon me Gangaur or teej to sooni gai hamari par fir bhi humne haath na failaye. Tere Bapu sa to teri shakal dekhne bhi na kyunki jaante the ki unki CHori kitne bade Ghar me gai hai. Kismat to hamari footi thi ki tu palle padi mere heere jaise bete ke."

" Meri Chori ke haath mein toh sheesha bhi suraj lagta hai. Tere Bhai Sa itna mehenga saaman laata hai, aur yeh..." Maasa said lovingly, she gestured dismissively toward the poshak-clad woman, "sab kuch barbaad kar deti hai."

Chavi hissed, "Bas itna keh rahi hoon, agli baar meri cheezon ko haath bhi lagaya na, toh seedha Maasa ke saamne nahi, police ke paas le jaungi."

The woman only nodded, the sting of humiliation burning behind her silence. No one asked how it broke.
They had already decided—she must have broken it. She started to leave as there was a lot of work pending. But she heard Chavi's words which made her tears flow under her veil.

"Maasa Bhabhi sa Jaan bujh kar karti hai ye sab. Raghav BHai sa kuch bhi nahi bhejte na inke liye isiliye mujhse jalti hain. Dekha tha na jab inki choti behen ki shaadi thi mene mana bhi kya tha ki me nahi jaaungi par aap le gai sab inki behne mujhe ghoor rahi this kyunki ye sab to unhone sapne me bhi dekha tha. Uske baad meri tabiyat kitni bigad gai thi yaad hai na Raghav BHai sa ne aapko kitna sunaya tha."

"Haan Beta, Magar mujhe kya pata tha ki lok laaj ki rasam me meri beti tabiyat kharab ho jaayegi. Mene to har roj teri najar utarna shuru kar diya hai tabhi se." Maasa rubbed her loving hand on CHavi's head. Vrinda was looking at them in deprive

Chavi, now 19, had blossomed into a bold, educated young woman. She had finished her graduation and was preparing for MBA entrance exams. She walked like she owned the air around her. And why not? Everyone adored her.

But her bitterness toward Vrinda had only sharpened.

"Tumse toh kuch hota nahi, Bhabhi. Na akal hai, na shakal. Mujhe toh dar lagta hai kahin aapki tarah na ban jaun shaadi ke baad." she'd say, rolling her eyes.
Maasa would laugh, "Chavi toh heere jaisi hai. Uske liye toh sheher ka raja dhoondhna padega."
And Vrinda would quietly fold the clothes or stir the daal, as if her ears had gone deaf.
