The company set up camp for the night near the edge of a cliff. As Gloin sleeps, tiny flying insects get sucked into his mouth every time he inhales, and they are expelled when he exhales. Bilbo and Fawn watch in disgust, Fawn by the fire and Bilbo lying on the ground next to him. Bilbo groans and gets up and walks around.
Most of the dwarves are asleep; Gandalf, Fili, and Kili are awake. Bilbo walks over to his pony and gives her an apple, after checking to see that no one is looking. Fawn chuckled.
Fawn had decided to stuck by Bilbo's side since he had no experience in the outside world. She would protect him better than the dwarves. She didn't mean to sound well mean it was just that the dwarves were good fighters and in some cases could fend for themselves.
Fawn hears a scream in the night air and becomes worried. Bilbo looks at her. He runs over to her, Fili and Kili watching him.
"What was that?"
"Orcs." Kilo says, faking alarm.
Another scream is heard. Thorin, who was dozing, jerks awake upon hearing the word "Orcs." Fawn watches him intently. He seemed a little too...Fawn shook her head.
"Orcs?" Fawn asks, not believing the dwarf.
"Throat-cutters. There'll be dozens of them out there. The lowlands are crawling with them." Fili states. Fawn cocks a brow. "Is that so?" Bilbo looked terrified but Fawn wasn't the least bit fazed. She's founght orcs before side-by-side with Gandalf. They always leave the small battles as victors.
"They strike in the wee small hours, when everyone's asleep. Quick and quiet; no screams, just lots of blood." Kilo says, his boring into Bilbo's.
Bilbo looks away in fright; Fili and Kili look at each other and begin laughing. Fawn glares and thinks about reaching for her bow. Fawn stands and moves to stand beside Bilbo.
"You think that's funny? You think a night raid by orcs is a joke?" Thorin says as he approaches the group.
Kili and Fili immediately stop. "We didn't mean anything by it." Kili apologizes.
"No, you didn't. You know nothing of the world."
Thorin walks off to the edge of the cliff and looks out over the valley. Fawn stares at him then her attention goes to Balin as he walks up to Fili and Kili.
"Don't mind him, laddie. Thorin has more cause than most to hate orcs. After the dragon took the Lonely Mountain, King Thror tried to reclaim the ancient dwarf kingdom of Moria. But our enemy had got there first."
Fawn blocks out his words, already knowing the tale of how Thorin defeated the pale orc and reclaimed Moria. Gandalf had told her the story once when she was a mere child, only just learning to speak. She smiled as she was taken back to her childhood.
"Adar! Adar!" The little girl wrapped her chubby arks around Gandalf's waist, her eyes twinkling as she gazed up at him in awe. He smiled and swooped her up in his arms, holding her close. "Yes my little vala." Her fingers immediately tangled in his beard as her one tooth grin widened. "Story!"
