3:25 AM

The flame died with a soft hiss.

Hazel stared at the smoldering wick, heart skipping a beat. Her breath caught in her throat.

Darkness swallowed her.

For a second, she couldn't move.

Then—

"Hazel." Taehyung's voice cut through the thick air, sharp and urgent. "Hazel, don't move."

His own candle burned bright, trembling with his sudden motion. He reached into his pocket with shaking hands, pulling out a match and striking it against the box.

The first spark failed.

He tried again. Again.

Hazel stood frozen, her eyes wide. The darkness wasn't just around her—it was pressing on her, like a weight on her chest, like fingers slipping beneath her skin. She gasped, stumbling backward.

A match finally flared to life.

"Come on, come on—" Taehyung brought it to her wick.

The flame didn't catch.

It should have. He did everything right.

The wick hissed... but refused to light.

Hazel whimpered. Something touched her—something cold and unseen brushing her neck, slithering like smoke down her back.

"Tae," she whispered, voice cracking. "I can't see—"

Then—

She was thrown.

Her body flew backward, slamming into the hallway wall with a sickening thud. The others cried out.

"Hazy!" Taehyung dropped the matchbox, rushing to her side.

Jimin turned toward them, his face pale. "Salt. Get the salt!"

Lisa ran toward the supply bag they had stashed in the corner. She grabbed the salt jar—but before she could toss it toward Hazel—

Whoosh.

The jar ripped from her hand, flung by an invisible force. It shattered against the floor.

Salt scattered everywhere.

Jungkook darted toward Hazel, a small pouch of backup salt in his hand—but just as he tried to draw a circle around her—

The salt lifted.

All of it.

Suspended in the air like dust... and then blasted back in every direction.

It was like watching gravity break.

"No, no, no," Rosé whispered. "That's not the Midnight Man. That's—"

Jimin's eyes widened. "Laura."

Behind Hazel—just for a second—they saw her.

A shape. A woman. Pale face. Long black hair soaked against her skin as if she'd just come out of water. Eyes empty. Hollow. Hungry.

Laura Martin.

Hazel cried out.

She was shaking, back arching off the ground as her limbs stiffened. Her candle lay useless beside her, dark and cold.

Taehyung dropped to his knees beside her, grabbing her hand. "Stay with me. Look at me, Hazy—look at me."

Her eyes fluttered.
