The thick grey clouds still stay high in the sky, shredding down, layer, and layers of snow.
"Does it ever stop snowing?" I ask.
"It's a winter island. So no," She says with a smile.
"I thought you couldn't feel cold." She says, looking back at me with a certain look."I don't. It just gets boring to look at after a day." I say. I gazed up at the sky and saw a green column of smoke in the white landscape.
"Nishia. Is that normal?" I ask, and she moves from the crib that held her sister. Her eyes widened at the shock of what she was peering at.
"It's not good." She says breathlessly. Her body stumbles back before she forgets she has knees and falls to the ground.
"Hey, don't worry. If it's Marines I can take care of them." I say as I try to reassure her. For a girl who wants to be stronger, she could try hard to stay on her feet.
"It's not Marines." She says like the lungs in her body couldn't hold her breath.
"I wish it was." She says with a gasp of air to try and fill her lungs. My eye roll was so big it seemed to scare her more."Do you always fight Marines?" She questions me even after her terror.
"Sure?" I cock an eyebrow at her as she sits on the floor and gawks at my answer.
"Are you wanted?" She asks as if she is surprised.
"Um.. Kinda of." I say with a shrug, and she looks like her mind is unfolding.
"How...?" She speaks before the logical part of her brain works, and then her body sinks dramatically.
"Of course, the first girl I see she that looks normal, and she turns out to be a criminal." She says as her eyes close and her hands thread in her rose pink hair.
"Says a beaten princess sitting like a child over green smoke." I smirk at my comeback, and she already had tears shining in her eyes.
"I was poisoned." She snarks at me, and I laugh.
"Sounds like the same," I say. "Now is the green smoke dangerous, or does it mean raiders?" I ask nonchalantly, and her facial expression changes to shock.
"Why are you calm?" She almost shouts.
"Because I got tired of crying in a corner when I was left on my own. No one comes to save you. You have to save yourself. Never beg and earn by winning, or else you won't get anything." I say, and Nishia looks at me with wonder.
"Someone I used to knew said stuff like that." She says weakly as tears drip down her cheeks.
"Who?" I ask with urgency, scaring her for a second.
"She used to be a bodyguard for me and my sister when we were being escorted to the Reverie. It's actually crazy how much you look like her." Her depressive expression makes my eyes brighten.
"Was her name Talho?" I ask, surprised that finally someone had seen my parents recently. Or I guess somewhat recently.
Nishia's eyes open and drop her hands from her hair.
"Yes, it was a while ago, but she was one of the strongest woman I knew." She says, and I grab her shoulders and shake her out of her sadness.
"Where did she go?" I say with fury in my eyes, and Nishia is frighten at my intensity.
"She left us when we made it to the island." She whimpered out as I dropped her to let her hit the floor.
"Why are they so fucking hard to find?" I scream with a frustrated tone and turn around to punch the building. Then Kimiko cries start to echo in my force field. Nishia was quick to check on her sister and calm her down before she looks at me with anger.
"Why are you looking for her?" She asks, keeping Kimiko silent.
"She's my mother." I say, and her shocked gasp coming out louder than she wanted. She covered her mouth and then calmed her breath.
"She told me something before she left." Nishia says as her eyes grow brighter. " She told me that if something ever happened to me or my family to try and make it to Elyota and ask for the cloud man." She says with a smile before wrapping Kimiko in her sling and holding her sister tight.
"Elyota?" I whisper the name. I definitely hadn't heard of the name.
"Did you really see my mom?" I ask her. Nishia pulled her bag from out where I had stuffed it. Her hands dig around in the bag before she pulls out a photo. My mother stood with a bright smile with whom I could only expect to be the queen and Nishia's mother. Their smile warmed my heart just knowing she's alive with hopefully everyone else.
"Was she alone?" I ask, and Nishia nods as she ties her bag to her waist.
"Tell me where your boat was?" She asks before pulling out a map and showing me all the ports that were closed off or ruined. I slowly follow my finger from the landmarks on the map and point to the side past the cemetery. Nishia sighs and looks back at the dark green smoke.
"If we make it fast, maybe we could beat them to the shore." She says as she hands me a gas mask. It was made out of a jug bottle and a wet sponge.
"What is this for?" I look at her with confusion while she sets one over her sister's tiny face.
"It stops his toxic bombs from killing us." She says, and before I could ask, she answered.
"My father still hunts for me and Kimiko." She said lowly as she draped a cloth over Kimiko. I grab my stuff and tighten my father's shoes, ready to run hard and fast.
"When we breach the snow, I'll put a force field around Kimiko." I say as I tie my pack on my back and breathe before I open the door, and both of us begin to sprint towards the last known direction of the boat.
