Weeks Later
POV Siren
Thick snow clouds covered every inch of the sky. Different from what I was used to but it was kinda nice to feel the snowflakes melt against my skin. Nishia and Kimiko are sleeping soundly in the warm cottage. I'm bringing back dead rabbits that I caught in the traps I set earlier. Warm soup would help our weak, recovering bodies. The crunch echoed in the silent snowy area as I made my way back. Crisp air burning my lungs as I pick up my pace, I haven't met anyone else on the island, but that doesn't mean we are all alone. At least I know they can't get through my force field without me knowing. The clearing opened up into a valley of blinding white. Shining like diamonds in the sun, this sight was something I had never seen before. Snow was like an urban legend on my island. Continuing down the path leading into the suburban houses where my force field stood strong. I'm not at my full health, but it's still sturdy. Entering the home as warmth engulfed my already scolding body temperature. Both of them were still asleep recovering themselves from their own painful memories. My business started in the kitchen, getting dinner ready while they slept. After the stew is made, all it needs to do is simmer for thirty minutes. Cleaning the mess in the kitchen before going to check up on both of their temperatures. Kimiko was doing much better from her fever, which honestly worried me, seeing as I never looked after a baby, let alone how to handle a sick one. Thank goodness for Marco teaching me so helpful medical knowledge. Like him and the rest of the whitebeard crew, all plague my dreams and make it painful to wake up. I find myself more often remembering my short time with them, but they left a big impact in my heart. Checking Nishia's temperature brought me out of my thoughts as she stirred awake.
"Good morning." My voice carrying no expression as I gathered the little medical supplies I had to put away.
"Morning." Her voice sounded better from the stretchy, dry voice I heard hours ago. My hand moves to caress her forehead to check her temperature. Her heat was subsiding.
"I'm glad you are feeling better. Kimiko is on the incline as well." I say, knowing it would reassure her. I can tell she is very protective over her sister. She kept repeating her name every second she was asleep.
"Good. I'm happy she's getting better. I felt hopeless." She said as she shifted in the bed I made for her.
"Everyone feels that way sometimes." I say as I turn to check on the stew. Nisha had gotten up and followed me to the kitchen. Her smile was like a bright star shining in the middle of this house.
"Have you ever cooked for a baby before?" Her voice was bright as her green eyes were wide with importance.
"So it's obvious, huh?" I snicker softly as I stir the thick stew.
"She can have the broth, right?" I ask with a cock eyebrow hoping she could tell me truthfully.
"Yeah, you used all safe ingredients. I don't know if she had rabbit before." Her voice was light before she turned, and grabs a rag. She coughs into the rag and leaves a thick black flem. I grabbed her before she crumbled.
"Marco did say that the poison would need to escape somehow." I say to myself as she spits out some flem into the rag.
"Who the fuck is Marco?" She said as she turned to look at me. My mind was taken back for a second.
"A friend." I say as I look at her with wonder.
"Are they on the island?" She asks with urgency, and her eyes grow wide.
"No, I travel alone." I tell her, but I don't like her reaction.
"Why are you so worried?" I ask, looking at the shock on her face when she looks back at the black flem.
"Strangers show up more and more to pillage the island, leaving very little for the rest of the survivors of the poison." She says bitterly. I move from her, and she winces when I do.
"Why are so damn scorching?" She says as she scoots away from me. My heart felt a sickening feeling with her tone and her expression.
"I was born on an island set on fire. Lived most of my days surviving. Like you. Until I stole a fruit." I said, standing up.
"Now eat. Those fits are gonna come and go, and they won't be pretty." I say as I grab the stew, and I hear Nisha breathe in slowly.
"I'm sorry. I haven't been the same since that day. I can't trust anyone." She says as her eyes sink to the ground and stare at the cobblestone floor.
"How about you start by telling me about it?" I say as I pick up Kimiko to let her sister hear her coos. The light in Nishia's eyes was glossy. She really does love her baby sister.
"I was watching her when I heard everyone screaming. Guard were even choking on the black jelly." She says as every word paints a picture.
"Who was it that poisoned everyone?" I ask as I bounce Kimiko slowly while she continues to wipe the corners of her mouth.
"I could only find one person responsible, but they died too." She whispers before tears slide down her cheeks.
"Were they someone you cared for?" I say with sympathy.
"It was my father." She says, sinking physically. I felt like my heart was being squeezed.
"He held my mother as she died and smiled before my older sister, who was choking heavily on the poison, stabbed him and fell dead herself." She says as she lays down on the ground, feeling how low she actually is. I set Kimiko down in the make shift crib I made.
"Did he say he poisoned everyone?" I ask, and her eyes were red and puffy already.
"He said he was going to finish the rest of us. I was learning Princess duties, and taking care of the younger siblings was a staple. Us women must care for the people." She whimpered out more.
I get up and get her a bowl of the rabbit stew.
"Here, this won't stop the pain, but it'll dull it for the moment." I say before she sits up slowly before taking the bowl and the spoon. She scoops around the chunks before tasting it. She pulls her shoulders and leans back against a pillar.
"It's warm. That's all the matters. I've been surviving on raw fish." She says as she looks at the crib.
"I could only find fruits and berries for Kimiko. I tried, but I'm not a good forager." She says as she looks back to me.
"Can you tell me how you got strong?" She asks like a girl who wishes upon stars.
"It didn't come easy, princess, but I can tell you have a lot of heart, and when you have something to protect, makes the choices even harder. With me, though, I think you'll get the hang of it." I say as I watch her eat.
"How did you get poisoned if you weren't at the dinner?" I ask, and she winces.
"My older sister didn't fully kill my father, and he was about to hit Kimiko." She starts to cry again before speaking.
"And I couldn't have her die. She hasn't even lived. She won't know the kind mother or older sister we had." She continues to eat because her stomach makes angry noises.
"You've already made sacrifices in the name of your sister. She's lucky that you survived, too. She really wouldn't have survived without you. Give yourself some credit here." I say as I've never had to care about a sibling. I only had myself to look out for.
"I've done very little." She says softly.
"Says the princess who took poison for her sister instead of her. Keeping her feed for whoever long." I say, and her eyes let out more tears.
"I want to become stronger." She says with a hard but determined face.
"You are already learning." I say as I smile at her.
