Night weighed heavy in Taehyung’s chambers. He wore only black lounge pants, feet chilled against the balcony stones. The scent again—stronger than ever, threading through the humid summer night: lavender, honey, the faintest trace of metallic sweetness. Almost maternal.

He gripped the railing. “Show me,” he snarled to the sky. No answer but a hush of wind.

Hoseok entered quietly. “Sire, your final guard rotation stands ready for morning. And a message: The bride requests a twilight walk.”

Taehyung’s laugh was low, humorless. “Tell her I’m meditating.”

“You’ve not meditated in years.”

“Then tell her I’m praying.”

Hoseok frowned. “To what?”

“To mercy.” Taehyung’s gaze cut toward the east wing roofs. “If it still exists.”

The next morning dawned slow and silver.

The Crystal Citadel transformed into a palace of celebration—lily-white banners trailing from towers, enchanted candles flickering down the staircases, snow-petal confetti drifting through the air without ever touching the ground. The world outside was preparing for a royal wedding.

And behind closed doors, two souls braced themselves for a different kind of collision.

------

In the royal dressing chamber, Taehyung stood stiff as a statue while Sooyun’s attendants pinned a snow-white ceremonial sash across his chest. Every muscle under his skin thrummed with restless energy; he had slept two hours at most, plagued again by phantom lavender.

The full-length mirror reflected perfection: hair pushed back with crystal clips, jacket fitted like armor, cufflinks etched with his family seal. None of it mattered. Beneath the silk, he felt hollow.

Sooyun swept into the room, gown of opalescent silk trailing like ice water. She dismissed her seamstress and circled him. “You look like a god, Your Highness.”

He grunted non-committally.

Her painted smile faltered. “We leave for the ballroom in two hours.”

“I’ll be there.”

She caught his sleeve—fingernails like polished daggers. “Whatever ghost you’re chasing, leave it outside. One word of hesitation up there and the Council will devour us both.”

Taehyung’s eyes flared red, and Sooyun stepped back. Good. Let her see the storm.

Namjoon entered, bowing. “Sire, the Queen requests your presence before the wedding. Private audience.”
