I walk into the hallways of school behind Brandon. Rob was meeting up with Preston to walk with him. Almost all of the heads turn towards me once people see who I am. I guess word got around that I slapped Lachlan. People start whispering and pointing when I walk by. I don't regret doing what I did, but everything is starting to make me feel uncomfortable.
Everything up until lunch time went okay. No one talked to me, which I'll take as a good thing. Then, as I was walking to lunch with Rob, someone came up to me. Two people. One wearing a red and black jacket and another wearing a pretty adorable bear hat."So you're the guy that slapped Lachlan?" Mitch asks. I nod hesitantly.
"Damn, that's pretty cool of you," Jerome says. "Lachlan's my friend and all, but he gets too much love in my opinion. Doing that is pretty brave."
"Thanks?" I reply, unsure of what I'm supposed to say.
"Watch out for Ryan, though. I heard he's not happy with you," Mitch advises me before leaving. I tug Rob's jacket and pull him towards the cafeteria.
"What do you think will happen?" Rob questions as we walk.
"Hopefully nothing too bad," I tell him.
"I'm crossing my fingers for you, too."
At our table, I see Brandon sitting, a rather awkward distance from Preston, who is also at our table.
"Umm, hi?" I say to Preston. He smiles.
"You know the whole school is talking about you, right?" He informs me. I shake my head.
"How can you not know? You're literally the center of attention everywhere!" Brandon points out. I simply shrug.
"He don't want to talk about it," Rob says for me. He takes a seat besides Preston, and I sit by Brandon, across from Preston.
"You should've just said so. We won't talk about it anymore," Brandon takes a bite of his sandwich. I'm jealous. My cold pizza isn't
nearly as appetizing."So to what do we owe the pleasure of having you here?" I ask Preston.
"Ryan was being a jerk towards you, and I was getting annoyed," He explains. "He was threatening do something to you, and you're Rob's friend, so I don't want that."
Rob's face turns slightly pink. I didn't think anyone who doesn't know him as well would notice, but Preston proves me wrong.
"Rob are you blushing?" He asks. Rob glances up at Preston quickly before shaking his head.
"N-no, why?" Bad move, Rob. Don't stutter.
"Well, you're a bit pink. Well, pinker than normal," Brandon tells him. Rob buries his face in his palms.
"I hate you guys," Rob mumbles at Brandon and I.
"Now, now, Rob. That's not a good attitude. You know we have a guest here," I scold playfully. Preston chuckles.
"He's right. You're not making a good impression," Preston joins in.
"You guys are all assh-" Rob is interrupted by Lachlan, who comes by. I'm assuming he doesn't notice me.
"Hey, Preston. Not joining us today?" He asks.
"Nope, I'm gonna stay with these guys until Ryan stops being a bitch," Preston replies smoothly. Lachlan looks at Rob, then Brandon, and then his eyes land on me. My eyes lock with his blue ones, and I have no clue what he's thinking. I wish I knew, though. It certainly would be helpful.
"Alright then. Later Preston," He says without looking away. He turns and walks back to his table where Mitch, Jerome, and Ryan were staring at me. They recognize me. Ryan's stare is more of a death glare while Mitch and Jerome's are pitiful looks. Lachlan sits down with them and looks back at me again. I finally decide to ignore it. I start listening, instead, to Preston and Brandon's argument instead.
"That's insane!" Preston exclaims.
"It's normal for me. I don't know anyone who does it your way to be honest," Brandon says. Preston is saying you should always put cereal before milk, but Brandon is saying the opposite.
"I put cereal in first, actually," Rob admits.
"I do too," I tell them. Preston gives Brandon a smug look, and Brandon rolls his eyes.
"You're all weirdos," Brandon says.
"You're the odd one out, so obviously you're the weirdo," Preston teases. Brandon throws a piece of bread at his head.
"Hey, I was having a good hair day!" Preston yells.
"Here, let me help," Rob says. He starts picking at Preston's hair, getting out the bits of bread. Some of it stuck because of the mayonnaise.
"Why would you use fucking mayonnaise?!" Preston yells again.
"It tastes good, alright? Stop questioning my motives, and let me live my life."
"Wow, that got deep," Rob says.
"Seriously," I agree.
"Moving on, though. Don't want to let that subject linger. Who knows what's gonna happen?" Preston jokes, making all of us laugh.
Maybe this guy won't be bad to have as a friend.
