"Kit, time to get up."
Calum's voice was what usually woke me up so I figured I was back at home again. The loud noise that came from someone cocking their gun was not what I typically heard so my eyes flew open in search of the source.
The safe house. Right. I was on a mission, specifically a take-back mission that I really didn't want to be on. I also managed to piss off our leader who was also the #1 survivalist in the city the night before. I was just on a roll with my shitty luck.
"C'mon, Kitty, get out of bed." Calum said, softly tugging on my arm.
"I'm awake." I said groggily, getting up out of the cot I was in.
I had gotten maybe three hours of sleep. It especially didn't help that I had to sleep in my clothes which I wasn't used to. I was used to one of Calum's old t-shirts and my underwear, not thick leggings that clung to the blanket and a heavy jacket that was used to keep me warm in the cold basement since the blanket was so thin.
"We'll eat breakfast and leave in half an hour." Ashton decided before glancing at me over his shoulder from where he sat by the fire. "Unless Princess Kitty has a problem with that too."
"It's Kit," I stated, not having the energy to put any hostility in my voice, "and can you drop it already? I didn't think you were that immature."
"Just making sure." he shrugged before turning back to the fire.
Breakfast was just bags of granola, water, and clementines. We had to bring things that we could ration so we made sure to eat the fruit first because we didn't know how long we'd be there. We were hoping to just get the infected today, keep it chained up in the separate room Michael had discovered, and go home the next day. However, we obviously couldn't completely plan out everything. Maybe we wouldn't even run into any infected. We didn't yesterday.
Once we'd eaten, we grabbed our belts and put our weapons in them. We put our shoes on and headed upstairs and out of the safe house. There was no sign of any infected but Ashton claimed he knew an abandoned city not too far away that would probably have more than a enough to pick from.
"How long would it take to get there?" Michael asked as we trekked through the woods. The dead leaves on the ground crunched under our feet, along with small twigs and sticks.
"About an hour," Ashton guessed, "maybe a little longer."
I sighed, "We get to walk an hour to almost die trying to catch an infected and then walk another hour back without getting bit. Sounds fucking great."
"We could do without the sarcasm, Kitty." Ashton said with a smirk clear in his voice.
I narrowed my eyes at his back, glad he couldn't see me because he'd just get more pissed off at me, "I swear to god, I-"
"Ashton, you're supposed to be the leader so stop instigating." Calum cut in, although I thought he'd just scold me for getting angry at Ashton. "You know she doesn't want you to call her Kitty so call her Kit like everyone else. If she has to respect you, you should respect her. Otherwise, she doesn't have any reason to respect you or your rules."
Ashton stopped walking and turned to face Calum. Calum didn't even flinch, his jaw set and his arms crossed because he knew he was right. That was a silent rule among every survivalist that was sent out on a mission. Everyone would show mutual respect, which also meant we could show mutual disrespect.
"Fine." Ashton finally said, looking at me instead. "I apologize, Kit."
I nodded, knowing there was no point in not accepting his apology, "I accept your apology and also apologize for fighting with you last night."
