Kaydence in MM.
As I fold up my clothes and pack them into my suitcase, I realize this is it! I am officially a freshman at Clark Atlanta University. Attending college is the best decision I've made considering everything that's been going on here at home. My parents have separated and are planning to go through with a divorce. My parents have been married for about thirty years and have three children together. Who ever would have thought that after thirty years and three kids two people would fall out of love with one another?
We've been here in Atlanta for about a year. We moved here from Charlotte, North Carolina after my dad found a better job than the one he'd had. Two or three months after we moved is when my parents started having problems.
Aside from that, none of the people I consider to be my "friends" are going to my school. Since we've been here, I've made a few friends. We hang out occasionally, but I don't consider any of them to be a "best friend." The only person that is my best friend is my sister, Kaylin.
Kaylin is 20-years-old and attends the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where she is majoring in Business Management. We were always tight growing up and we still are. It's just hard to have the only person I consider my best friend so far away.
I'm also close to my brother, Damien, but I can't talk to him about everything I talk to Kaylin about. Damien is 22 and he is currently serving in the military. He left not long after my parents separated. He kept saying he was going to enlist, but never really took it seriously. I believe all the tension in the house drove him to leave.
"Darryl, I'm not going through this with you right now!" I hear my momma yell.
"Why not? You want to go through with this divorce right?" My daddy yells back.
I stop packing and listen.
"You gave me no other choice. Enough is enough and I'm not going through this with you anymore!"
"So you're Miss Perfect now? You act as if you've never made a mistake!"
"I have made mistakes, but the one you made is one that should have never happened!"
"Karen, if I could take it back I would. I love you, I'm sorry. I don't know what else to say. I just want you and my babies back. That's all."
There is a moment of silence.
"Darryl, I really think you should go."
There is another brief moment of silence and then the front door closes. I guess they still love one another, but what mistake did my dad make? It had to be something drastic to make mom decided to end their marriage.
I continue to gather my clothing and pack them into my suitcase. As I am grabbing some things from my dresser drawer, there is a light knock on my room door.
"Come in," I don't look up.
The door opens and Momma is standing in the doorway.
"How is everything coming along in here?" She leans against the doorframe.
"Well, I'm just about done." I toss some shirts into the suitcase. "Is everything okay?"
"Yeah...what would make you ask that?" She cocks her head to the side.
"I heard you and daddy."
"Oh..."
"Momma, what's going on with you two? All you ever do is argue. It's like y'all don't love each other anymore."
"Sweetie, I love your father very much. But, there have been a lot of things that have gotten us to this point. We're just drifting apart...and despite what happens with us we still love you, Kaylin, and Damien."
"I know."
"Well, I will let you finish packing."
She smiles and closes the door behind her.
As I continue to pack my suitcase, my mind wanders onto my boyfriend, Rich. Rich and I have been dating for about six months. We met at a party I went to during my senior year of high school. He approached me and we started talking. A few weeks after, we started dating. Rich is tall and slender, has smooth milk chocolate skin, and has long hair that he keeps in braids. My parents don't know, but he is a drug dealer. I know that isn't something I should get caught up in, but he never handles business around me. Rich has been through a lot in his personal life, and being in the streets is a part of it. For him, the money is right and he is able to help his mom with his younger siblings since his father is no longer living.
I grab my phone and dial his number. The phone rings and rings and finally the voicemail picks up. I hang up and send him a text message and wait for him to reply.
Although Rich and I have only been together for a short time, I often wonder where our relationship will go. Will we get married and have kids? Will he get me pregnant and leave? I want us to get married and have kids, but there is no way that could be in future if he is still selling...only time will tell what the future holds.
