Tai screaming is followed by the loud gunshot. I slowly open my eyes and see blood all over his arm leaking from his right shoulder. I rush to his side afraid to touch him and unsure of what I should even do. I look around and Rich has run off. Emory is still standing where she was before and I can tell she is scared out of her mind.
"Oh my goodness! Tai are you okay?"
"Ahhhhh!" Tai screams.
"We need to get you to the hospital. Emmy, help me get him to the car!"
Emory rushes over and we attempt to pick Tai up. Although he has a slender frame, he's no lightweight. We eventually get him up and make it to the car. I pat his pockets for the keys and finally find them in his back pocket. We get Tai into the backseat and Emory gets in the back with him. I hop in the front seat and start the car. I pull off and approach a stop sign and realize I have no idea where I'm going.
"Emory, find the nearest hospital!"
Emory pulls out her phone and begins typing. I look over at Tai and he's still holding his shoulder and breathing heavily.
"Okay, the nearest hospital is a few miles away. Make a left."
I do what Emory says and she guides me to the hospital. Within 5 minutes, we pull up to the emergency entrance. Emory and I both get out and try to help Tai out of the car. As we're trying to get him out, one of the nurses runs up to us.
"What's wrong with him?"
"He's been shot in his right shoulder," I answer her.
She runs back inside and comes back with a wheelchair. We help Tai sit down and the nurse rolls him inside. Emory and I are running behind her and when she approaches a set of double doors, more doctors appear. She explains what's going on and they all go through the doors. When Emory and I try to follow, we're stopped.
"They're taking him into surgery. You ladies have to wait in the waiting room," the nurse who met us outside said.
We simply turn around and find seats in waiting room. I sit, but cannot keep still. I'm nervous and shaking.
"I never meant for this to happen," I say as tears sting my eyes. "If he doesn't make it, I don't know that I'll do. This is all my fault."
I put my hands over my face and break down. Emory just rubs my back.
About three hours go by and Emory and I have fallen asleep in the waiting room. I wake up and check my phone. It's 3:17am.
"Is there anyone here for Tai Alsina?" The doctor walks into the waiting area.
"Me," I begin walking towards him. "How is he? Please tell me he's okay..."
"He's fine, he's resting. The bullet went through his right shoulder. He bled out a good bit, but we stabilized him and got the bleeding to stop. He has some muscle damage, so he's going to need to attend physical therapy if he wants to be able to use that arm regularly again. Do you know who did this to him?"
I was quiet for a moment then spoke.
"It was my ex boyfriend. He got mad because I started talking to and Tai and he showed up at a party we were at tonight."
"We're going to have to get the police down here and you're going to have to give a statement."
"Oh no, I can't."
"You have to. This is a serious crime and your friend could have gotten killed. The perpetrator needs to be caught."
I really don't want to tell because I know Rich will come after me if he gets caught. But Tai could have lost his life and it would have very well been my fault.
