The sound of Chris Brown's voice fills the air as the alarm on my phone goes off signaling me that it is time to wake up. Today is the first day of classes and I don't want to be late, considering the fact that I don't know where I'm going. I turn the alarm off and stretch. The early morning sun shines through the window onto my face. As soon as I open my eyes, the sun blinds me. Instantly, I close them and sit up. I look over and see that Emory is still sleeping. She's lucky, she doesn't have class until later.
I grab all the necessary items I need and go take a shower. I dress in a fitted plain white tee, denim Bermuda shorts, and my white and gray Air Jordan 4's. I put on my everyday jewelry: gold rope necklace, hoop earrings, bangles, and rings, then spray on some of my favorite Victoria's Secret perfume. I gather all my books and head out to my first class, which is English. With my map of the campus in hand, I search to find my English class. After wandering around and finally stopping to ask for directions, I find my class.
When I walk in, the classroom is already full and I find an empty seat towards the back. I get out a notebook and a pen preparing to take notes. The teacher waits a few minutes before closing the door and standing before the class.
"Good morning everyone, welcome to freshman English. My name is Mrs. Lockhart."
She goes over to her desk and grabs a stack of papers.
"This is the course syllabus and assignment sheet."
She walks around the room and passes out the papers to everyone. She takes her place back at the front of the room and begins to go over everything from what we'll be doing this semester to the rules of her classroom.
"Are there any questions?" Mrs. Lockhart looks around the room.
Each of us looks around to see if anyone else has a question, and no one does.
"Well, I would like to take some time to get to know each of you. I would like for you to stand and tell us your name, where you're from, your major, and something you like to do in your spare time. Would anyone like to start?" Mrs. Lockhart looks around the room.
No one stands or raises their hand.
"I guess that means I have to pick a volunteer."
She looks around the room for a moment and then her eyes meet mine.
"Will you start us off young lady?"
Man! Why me?
I slowly stand and look around at my classmates who all have their eyes on me.
"Uh...my name is Kaydence...and I'm from North Carolina. My major is Fashion...and something I do in my spare time is draw sketches of designs that I want to one day be a part of my clothing line."
"Thank you Kaydence," Mrs. Lockhart smiles at me.
Smiling back, I take my seat and listen as the rest of the students stand and introduce themselves to the class.
After English class is over, I head to the dining hall to get something to eat since I have about an hour before my next class. There are unfamiliar faces everywhere and I instantly grow uncomfortable. I walk over to the counter and see what I want to eat. There are so many choices, I don't know where to begin! I decide on some grits, eggs, and bacon and apple juice to drink.
When I get to the front counter, the cashier rings me up.
"Are you on a meal plan?" She asks.
"Yeah."
"I need your student ID please."
I search my pockets...no ID. I look through my bookbag, still no ID. Then it hit me, my ID is on my desk back in my dorm.
