Robert Sherman
I had stepped through the portal just seconds before, and now I found myself behind... was that a car? I put my hands up to shield my body, and then suddenly the car was crashing into me. I fell to the ground, my leg now bruised, and then I felt the car stop. I looked around to see a young lady looking at me. She seemed to be shouting something at me, but all I heard was: "Are you bleeding?"
I looked into her eyes and replied, "I'm fine." She had dull blue eyes, certainly not as bright as the eyes in 2040. I was a bit taken aback by that thought. Ah, that's right, they haven't evented the chemical yet.
"Are you sure?" she asked quickly.
"To prove it to you, I'll stand up, okay?" as soon as I put pressure on my leg I winced. I would have to find a hotel or something for the night. I made sure the pain was wiped from my face before facing her again. She seemed taken aback.
"W-what's your name?" she asked suddenly. Now it was my turn to be surprised. I hardly knew her, but then I figured she would want to know my name. I probably looked way better than the other guys in town.
"It's Robert, but you can call me Robbie," I only told my close friend's to call me that. It would be weird to hear her calling me Robbie... she snapped me out of my thoughts as she said her name.
"I'm Sara." An acquaintance isn't an acquaintance until you shake hands, so I was glad that she put her hand out. I sure wasn't going to put mine out, she would probably get nervous that I was going to kidnap her or something...
"It's nice to meet you, Sara. Next time I hope we'll meet more... formally." I chuckled as I said this, and she blushed. I realized that this was my time to ask if there were any good apartments around, so I did.
"Oh... yes, there's actually an apartment for sell... it's right in my apartment building. I could drive you there if you'd like." She seemed to be a little nervous for offering.
"Sure, thanks." I looked around. This isn't her home? Why was she here? Visiting someone? Maybe her boyfriend? With these thoughts I added quickly, "If it's not too much trouble..." she cut me off.
"Not at all!"
So I followed her to her car and got in the passenger side. She looked around before getting into the car, and then got in with a sigh.
"Where you from?" Sara asked quietly. I was almost surprised by her quiet voice, but then again, I was just now getting used to it. My mind raced from her question. What am I supposed to say? If I hesitate anymore she'll think I'm lying... And I can't say I'm from Oregon because that's where we are right now...
So, with as much speed as my mind could take, I answered, "Idaho."
"That's close. Are you visiting?"
"Nah, I'm moving in." I hoped she couldn't hear the lie in my voice.
"That's great! Maybe we'll be neighbors..." she cut herself off, and I was starting to think that she might have a thing for me... as in liking me.
"That would be nice," I answered back. I might as well play the game. She glanced at me nervously and then looked back to the road. I could sense her nervousness, so I added, "we'd see each other off and on... ugh, I should just stop talking, shouldn't I."
