Veronica looked expectantly at me, before stepping a foot away from me.  "I'm sorry... I don't know what overcame me."

"It's... it's fine," I stuttered, still not understanding why she just kissed me on the cheek.  It's not like she kissed me on the lips or anything...  She stood quietly for a second, just looking out over the beach and then turned to me again.

"Thank you for talking with me... it was... refreshing to get all that out there," she looked down before looking back up.  "Do you want my number?"

"Uh.... sure," I replied.  She must have known that I'd say yes.  She slowly repeated her number for me, and I, just as slow, or even more so, clicked it into my phone.  "Thanks."

"See you around," she said, sauntering off on the pathway we had come on.

"Okay," I called nervously.  What is this Kent person like?  Really... can he be as bad as she's described him?  Suddenly I got an idea forming in my mind, and I dug through my pockets, yet again, for my cell phone.  After clicking on Sara's number, I was relieved to hear her voice on the other side.

"Sorry, I'm away from the phone right now or unavailable to pick up, please leave a message after the beep... thanks."  Beep...

"Hey Sara, it's me Robbie... I was just wondering if you could call me back when the chance comes... thanks."  I quickly snapped the phone shut and smiled to myself.

Sara Watson

After eating a quick breakfast, I hurried out to my car and got in.  Of course it's only logical that I'd know where Alan's apartment is... after all I dated him for a few months and went to his apartment numerous times...

I parked my car outside the door and walked confidently up to the door, knocking loudly.  The door opened after a few moments of silence, revealing Alan and another girl.  I controlled my immediate reaction to the girl, and smiled instead.

"I have your money," I announced briefly, while taking the wad out of my pocket.  He grunted and turned from me to the black haired beauty behind him.  I recognized her as the same girl he was with when he dumped me.  How can a man do that to a girl?  After watching him whisper something to her, she left us to ourselves by going calmly to the kitchen.

"Come in," Alan finally said, making room for me to pass him.  I hesitantly stepped through the doorway and into his apartment.  It was actually quite roomy with a few chairs off to the side facing a big, screen TV.  Off to my left I could see the opening to his clean office: he always kept it clean because, as he has told me before, he didn't want to misplace any special documents.  Right in front of me, leads to the kitchen: it has a white stove, a few cupboards, and a small counter with a toaster and microwave on it.  To my right, past the living room, you could see his closed bedroom.  He never let me in there, so I don't really know what it looks like...

Alan's voice cut me out of my memories, and as he speaks, he smiles encouragingly at me.  "Sit down."

"Alright..." I said hesitantly, going over to the comfy chair.  This way he won't be able to sit next to me.  I look everywhere but him.  I know I shouldn't be alone with him, but I think I have no choice in this matter.

"I wanted to talk to you about our relationship..."

"What relationship?" I retort, looking up sharply, right into his eyes.  I look quickly away and stare at the TV.  Our reflections show, kind of warped like, and I notice that he's looking at me.  I sigh.  "Go on."

"I know that I broke off suddenly," he starts.  I snort and then let him go on.  "But I had my reasons..."

"What reasons?" I asked angrily, standing up abruptly.  "What reasons?"

"I promise you it was all for the best," Alan replies calmly.  I sit down hesitantly and look away again.  "I know I shouldn't have left you like that, and I'd like to make things right..."

"You want to make things... right?" I asked surprised.  Was he going to ask me out again?  But he can't!  I'm going on dates with Robbie!  I looked around frantically, looking for a way out of this mess, when suddenly his sharp voice cuts into me again.

"I..." he looks down suddenly, and when he looks back, he looks upset.  "I shouldn't have broken off the engagement, and I'd like to tell you that... that... I'd like to get back together."

My heart seemed to race a thousand miles per hour as I considered what he has just said.  When I finally calmed down, I looked across the small space to get a good look at him.  His red, round face looked apologetic enough, but I wasn't so sure.  "You expect me to get back with you after three months have passed?" I asked angrily now.  How could he propose marriage and then break it off two weeks before the wedding?  I mean... I told every one of my friends, family, and acquaintances.  How could he humilate me so much?

"Yes..."

"Well," I interrupt, "just expect me to say no," and stand up abruptly again.  He looks at me surprised.  "Here's your money," I hand him the wad of green and stalk out of the apartment.

"Where are you going?" he asked quietly.

"To work," I replied, a little bit angry still.  He just expects me to stay stuck on him?  Well, I've got news for him... I've moved on!  I storm angrily from the apartment, slamming the door behind me and getting into my car.   But before I can close the door all the way I hear his voice calling to me.

"Wait Sara!" I look up expectantly and see him running down his steps.  "Wait!"  I waited for him to get to the car before slamming the door in his face.  He looked at me in shock.  "Please," I saw him mouth.  I rolled down the window relunctantly.

"Why are you doing this?" I asked shortly.

"Doing what?"

"Don't pretend like you don't know!" I retorted angrily.  "That girl... who is she?"  I felt my voice rise just a little bit more as he looked at me puzzled.

"She's my... she's my..."

"Right... you don't have an answer for me, do you?" I asked, fighting back the urge to drive off and leave him on the sidewalk gaping.  "That means she's your girlfriend.  You really didn't think I'd notice?"

He looked warily at the apartment and then back at me.  "I--" I cut him off again.

"I'm not stupid Alan... I saw her with you the night you dumped me... and guess what... that calendar that you gave me for the, and I quote, 'breaking up gift', I threw it away."  Alan raised a bushy eyebrow and leaned toward me.

"Well you know what, Sara?"

"What?" I replied, getting caught up in the moment.

"You'd better watch over Robert, your boyfriend... he's going to get into some serious trouble..." he winked at me before walking back into his apartment.  As I started to drive shakily away I looked back to see him peeking out of the blinds at my car.

What does he mean by saying that Robbie will be getting into trouble?  I mean... he can't get into too much trouble... he doesn't know anyone but me and Kelly...

I brushed off my feelings and quickly drove toward my work.  It can't really be that bad... can it?  Then, with a sickening realization, I thought: is Alan planning on doing something to Robbie?
