Sara Watson
Ten o'clock came faster than I liked. Kelly and I waited outside my apartment for a few moments before we walked over to his apartment to get him. We knocked on the door and waited till it popped open for a second and then closed real fast.
"One second," he called from inside. Kelly and I looked at each other confused. Suddenly the door was open and Robbie stood in the doorway. "Are we taking your car?"
"Yes." I replied. "Come on, we're going to be late."
Kelly had already started to walk toward the car in a brisk pace. She opened the back seat door and hopped in. I sighed. Of course she'd leave the front seat open for Robbie to sit. I started to walk toward my car slowly, with Robbie trailing behind me with his hands in his pockets.
"So, what do you like to do?" he asked suddenly.
"Well, I rock climb," I responded. We were next to the car now, and he made his way to the passenger side. I opened the driver side and gave Kelly a 'why did you do this?' look. She giggled silently.
"That's cool. I've never actually gone rock climbing before. It's going to be a first."
"You'll like it," Kelly piped up. She blushed when Robbie turned in his seat and put out his hand.
"We haven't actually met properly," he started. "I'm Robert Sherman."
"Hello, Robert," she replied, putting her hand in his. "I'm Kelly Harper."
Robbie smiled and pulled his hand away. "Do you go rock climbing every day?"
"Something like that," I replied hesitantly.
"Do you get a pass or is it free?" he questioned again. I looked in the rear view mirror, and Kelly shrugged.
"We know the owner and he gives us free passes-- he pays for them." Kelly cut in. I smiled at her thankfully.
Robbie nodded and then went silent.
"Do you do anything?" I asked, while glancing in his direction. We were now on the road to the gym.
"I..." he seemed to not know what to say.
"So?" I prompted.
"I go biking."
"Biking sounds like fun! Do you have a bike here with you?" Kelly asked.
"I left it in Idaho."
"Oh," was all I could think of. "Is that why we're shopping after rock climbing?"
"Of course."
I nodded while pulling into the parking lot of the gym. Kelly hopped out before I had a chance to stop the car completely, and was up to the doorway of the gym before Robbie was even out of the car.
"She must be eager to start," Robbie breathed in.
I rolled my eyes and started to walk to the entrance myself. Robbie, instead of staying behind me, came to stand next to me.
"Do you have a harness on when you rock climb?" he asked nervously. I smiled at him before replying.
"Of course you do."
"I just want to know what I'm going into," he replied.
"It's not that bad," I insisted. "You are put into a harness, you connect the rope to the harness, and then someone stands on the ground, holding the rope, so you don't fall if you slip on the rocks. It's really fun. Trust me."
