We had been driving for a few minutes and it was oddly awkward between us. I think Billie could tell something was up and was waiting for me to say something, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it. I wished he could just read my mind... it would be so much easier.
"Tré?" He piped up, interrupting my train of thought.
"Hmm?"
"Is... everything okay? Have I done something?"
"What? No! I just... I have things on my mind."
"Well spill it then, we haven't got all day." He smiled reassuringly at me and I sighed.
"Bill, I wouldn't even know what to say."
"Are you breaking up with me?" He pretended to get upset and fanned his face with his hand, "because I don't know what I'd do if we were ever apart!"
I just looked at him and tried to think of something to tell him. He frowned, "Tré?"I had to say it. It was now or never, I just had to get it over with. "Listen Billie... I just... lately I feel a lot closer to you... I mean I've always liked you but last night I realised that... I think I like you..."
He hesitated, "you 'like' me? What does that mean?"
I could tell he felt uncomfortable and I tried not to look at him."I... I don't know. I just want to be with you... but being your friend just doesn't seem enough anymore."
He was quiet. He didn't look at me, or even in my direction, just stared out the window.
I looked from the road to him, starting to panic. "Well say something then, don't just sit there without talking to me!"He shook his head, "I don't know what you want-" he looked back to the road and his eyes widened. I looked too but it was already too late. I had drifted over onto the other side of the road and a van was coming towards us. Well, I say 'coming towards us' I mean it was already on us.
I tried to swerve out of the way but the front of the van hit the back of my car, making the front spin round and veer back onto the wrong side of the road. The car clipped the curb and I tried to turn the wheel away from it. It was the wrong thing to do and the car flipped into the air. Everything seemed to stand still and I stared at the road in front. There were cars all around, all of the people driving were staring at us in horror, their faces showing that they were expecting the worst. I blinked and looked at my friend next to me. His eyes were bulging and he was gripping the handle on the door. I imagined that my expression was the same as his...After what seemed like an eternity of hanging in the now upside down veichle, the speed returned to normal and the roof came crashing down on our heads as it collided with the road. The upturned car carried on down the road before skidding to a halt and I reluctantly opened my eyes.
