THE HOUSE WAS QUIET AT FIRST—at least as quiet as it could be with three children inside. Afternoon light spilled through the wide windows of the living room, painting long stripes across the tatami floor. A few toys were scattered across the space: wooden blocks, a stack of picture books, and a small plush shaped like a dragon that looked a little too worn around the edges.
Sion sat cross-legged by the low table, carefully piecing together a puzzle his dad bought him a week ago. His blonde hair caught the sunlight, and his crimson eyes narrowed with the kind of focus most kids his age would never bother with. Every so often, his small fingers hovered over the mismatched pieces, testing, rejecting, then finally slotting one into place.
Behind him, chaos brewed.
"Nooo, you cheated!" Satoru's voice rang out, sharp and dramatic. His white hair was already sticking in wild directions as he waved his arms at his brother.
Sukea blinked at him. "It's not cheating. You just weren't paying attention." His tone was even, but the slightest curve of his lips betrayed the satisfaction of winning.
The two had been racing toy cars down the wooden hallway, and as usual, Sukea's quiet precision had beaten Satoru's wild, overconfident maneuvers.
"I was paying attention!" Satoru argued, cheeks puffed. "Your car—your car jumped the line! You moved it with your hand!"
"I didn't," Sukea reached down, calmly picking up his car as if the conversation were already over. "You just lost."
Satoru's dramatic groan echoed through the house. He flopped onto his back, sprawled on the hallway floor like the world had ended. "Ughhh, nii-chan's so boring! You don't even get mad!"
Sion glanced up from his puzzle, suppressing a sigh. "Both of you are loud."
The eight-year-old got up, padding across the room with an emotionless face as he had grown used to managing the twins. He leaned against the doorway, looking down at Satoru, still rolling on the floor.
"You're gonna hit your head if you keep doing that," Sion pointed out. "Then you'll cry and blame everyone else."
"I don't cry!" Satoru shot up instantly, indignant, blue eyes flashing.
"You cried last week when you tripped over the futon," Sion reminded him.
"That doesn't count!"
Sukea, already walking past them toward the kitchen, spoke without looking back. "It does count."
"Shut up!" Satoru yelled, scrambling to chase after his twin.
Sion pinched the bridge of his nose, muttering under his breath. "Every day..."
The sounds of tiny footsteps pounding toward the kitchen filled the house. Sukea had climbed onto a stool, calmly pouring juice into two small cups without spilling a drop, while Satoru attempted to snatch one before he'd even finished.
"Wait your turn," Sukea said flatly.
"But I'm thirsty now!"
"Then wait faster."
The bickering filled the air again, but it wasn't heavy—it was the familiar noise of siblings, the kind of lively chaos that made the house feel alive.
