The next morning I awoke with something heavy stretching across my waist and something warm against my back. I snuggle into the warmth, sighing in contentment.
Then, my eyes shot open.
This was the first time, in two weeks, that I haven't been woken up because I had died. The first time I hadn't woken up because of being shot or falling off a cliff, in two weeks.
And then I remembered that there was someone in my bed with me. I looked down at the arm that was scrawled across me and noticed the light blue fingernails. I then turned my head more and saw Dakota sleeping peacefully next to me.
For a second, my sleep-filled brain thought that it was a dream and then the memories from yesterday came rushing back. A goofy smile spread onto my face.
I had met Dream Girl.
I had met the girl who had been haunting my dreams for the past two weeks.
I still had that goofy smile on as I tried to untangle myself from Dakota. Key word: tried. As soon as I started sliding away from her, she pulled me back and snuggled into my back a bit more. I sighed as I resigned myself to staying there for awhile.
As I settled down, I turned to my other side. I studied her face, noticing how peaceful she looked when she was asleep. She had a slight smile on her lips. Her eyes fluttered behind her lids, almost as if she was dreaming. I reached a hand up to face and caressed her cheek. I rubbed my thumb across her cheekbone, savoring the soft skin there.
After a couple more minutes of me studying her, her eyes fluttered open. They widened a little bit as she looked at me. Her eyebrows furrowed and I brought my hand over to her forehead, smoothing out her expression with my hands.
"Am I dreaming?" Dakota mumbled, her eyes moving over my features. I felt her fingers tighten on my back, her fist clenching around the fabric of my shirt. I shake my head and, after a second, her eyes widen a bit more.
"You didn't have one of the dreams last night, did you?" I said, smiling at her. She shook her head, smiling as well.
Just then, we hear a pounding on the door.
"Mackenzie Elikapeka Carpenter! If you don't open this door right now, I'm coming in!" Piper's voice yells from the hallway.
I sigh, getting up and walking out of my room and to the front door. I unlock, then open, the door.
"What, Piper?" I ask, annoyed that she had ruined the moment between me and Dakota. I notice tears in her eyes and streaks down her cheeks. I usher her through the door, my annoyance slipping away. "What's wrong, Pipes?"
"Connor broke up with me." She states right before she starts bawling her eyes out, most likely not for the first time today. I pull her into my arms, rubbing her back as I walk her to the couch. As we sit down, I notice Dakota in the doorway to my room with wide eyes. I motion for her to head to the kitchen, mouthing for her to get the ice cream out of the freezer.
"Shh, it's gonna be alright." I comfort her as I keep rubbing her back. She keeps crying, sobs escaping her throat every couple of seconds. After about a minute of this, Dakota comes out with the carton of ice cream and a spoon. I reach one hand out and grab it. "Here, have some ice cream."
She sniffs, pulling off me and grabbing the carton and opening it. She sticks the spoon into the carton and eats a spoonful.
"Wanna talk about it?" I say, my eyebrows furrowed in concern. Dakota comes and sits beside me, her hand on my back. I look over at her to see concern etched onto her features as well. I look at Piper to see her nod. "Okay, so what happened?"
"I came home and he sat me down-" She sobs, cutting off her sentence. I reach forward and wrap an arm around her shoulders. I know she'll continue, so I wait, rubbing my hand up and down her arm. "He sat me down and told me we were through, that he didn't love me, and that he wanted me to move out."
"And what did you say?" I ask, my voice gentle. She smiled a bit, a chuckle escaping her lips.
"I told him to fuck off." She says and I chuckle. Then, I notice her smile had faded. I sigh, running a hand through my hair, trying to figure out an idea to cheer her up. Another smile breaks out on my face as I think of an idea.
"You know what we're going to do?" I say, looking down at her. She shakes her head, her eyes brimming with tears again. "We're going to change into our onesies and fluffy socks and we are going to pig out on junk food while we watch movies."
She smiles up at me and nods. I get up and offer one of my hands to each of them. We all head to my room and I open up the drawer that I have all of Piper and I's onesies, which amounts to about five.
I pick out my favorite, a Cheshire Cat one, and Piper picks out her favorite, a kangaroo one. After that, we let Dakota pick out one and she picks out a unicorn one. Once we've all changed into them, I pick up my phone, calling the pizza place and ordering three large pizzas. After that I go into my kitchen and look in the freezer. I grabbed all of the ice cream and frozen yogurt. After that, I grab the chips, brownies, and popcorn out of the cabinets.
Since I had pre-popped popcorn, I balance everything in my hands and move out to the living. I put everything onto the coffee table and move back to the kitchen to grab spoons for the frozen yogurt and ice cream.
As I come back in, I see that they've picked out the movie. I laugh at their choice, knowing the reason behind it.
"Really? Mulan?" I say as I sit down in between them. I put my arm around Dakota's shoulders and she snuggles into my side.
"Yes, Mulan. She kicks ass." Piper argues back. I raise my hands in defeat, laughing as I do.
After that, we settle in for a night of junk food and girl power movies.
