As we walked out of the restaurant, Dakota's fingers intertwined with mine. I smiled over at her, somehow feeling happier than I had in a while with her just being there.
Dakota's POV
As we walked to Mackenzie's apartment, I couldn't help but admire the way her pale blue eyes sparkled in the sun.
This girl was stunning. She had the body of an athlete, with lean muscles that a runner or swimmer might have. She had a slight tan, that looked to be left over from the summer. Her wavy hair was swept over her shoulders, contained by a beanie. Her eyes stood out against her hair, making them look lighter.
As we reach her place, I stop my admiring and look around. My eyes widen in shock and my mouth falls open.
It's a very big apartment for someone who lives alone, on a college student's budget. The whole place looks huge and I see a hallway with doors to more rooms.
"This place is really nice." I tell her as I walk into the room. I start looking around as Mackenzie walks into the kitchen.
From the living room, which is basically all I can see, it looks like she spent a lot of time on the decor of the place. There's a large grey sofa that wraps around the living room. There are about a dozen colorful pillows on various places on that couch. There's also two blankets that drape over the back of the couch. In front of that is a coffee table made of wood with intricate designs carved into it. The wall that the TV and stuff is on is all shelves, except where everything electronic is. The TV is mounted to the wall and the cable box looks like it's floating. Not only that, but the shelves around the TV are all filled with books. I start skimming the titles and it looks like they're sorted by their age, which must have taken a lot of time to do.
"Hey, do you want anything to drink?" Mackenzie asks from the kitchen. I get up and walk over to her, getting a glimpse of the kitchen.
The kitchen is huge, especially for an apartment. The counters are marble and the cabinets are made of wood. There's an oven, dish washer, refrigerator, sink, and an island in the center of the kitchen. Above the island, a bunch of pots and pans are handing from the ceiling.
"Wow." I say, still looking around the kitchen. Mackenzie smiles while taking two glasses down from the cabinet above the sink. "How can you afford this?"
Mackenzie's smile drops for a second before her expression becomes a bit sheepish. She puts the glasses on the counter and turns to me, rubbing the back of her neck.
"My family is rich." She says, wincing a bit as she says it. "My mom is the CEO of Carpenter Company and my dad is a lawyer."
"Okay." I say, shrugging. I boost myself onto the island and watch as her expression turns to one of surprise. "What?"
"Usually people start getting kind of angry at this point." She moves over to the fridge and takes out some iced tea. She gestures at it to see if I want any and I nod. She moves back to the glasses pouring iced tea into each glass.
"Why would I be angry?" I ask, taking the glass of iced tea as she hands it to me.
"Because I've had it easy. I haven't had to deal with anything completely terrible and they think I'm a spoiled rich kid." Mackenzie says, looking down at her drink. I place the glass on the island and slip off of it.
I make my way over to her, taking her hand and kissing her knuckles. When I look back up, she's staring at me with wide eyes.
"I'm not angry." I whisper, not knowing why I am. My eyes glance to her lips for a split second. "And I know that you aren't a spoiled rich kid."
As I say this, a smirk forms on my lips. She laughs and pushes me playfully.
Just then, we hear a knock on the door. I give Mackenzie a confused look and she shrugs. She makes her way to the door, me following a couple feet behind.
Mackenzie's POV
Once I reach the door, I open it, coming face to face with a furious Piper holding her fist up with her phone pressed to her ear.
"Yeah, she's here. I'll talk to you soon. Love you." Piper says as she walks passed me into the apartment. She hangs up the phone and sits down on the couch. "You better have a good reason for why you weren't picking up your phone."
"I was on a date." I say, walking over to her and sitting on the couch a couple feet away from her. Dakota stands awkwardly for a couple of seconds before I motion for her to sit next to me. As she sits down, I continue,"Speaking of, Dakota, this is my best friend Piper. Piper, this is Dakota. She's the dream girl."
"That's such a horrible ex- Wait, dream girl?" Piper cuts off her own sentence when she processes what I said. She looks at Dakota with an astonished expression on her face. "You weren't kidding when you said she was gorgeous."
"No, I wasn't." I say, grinning and looking over at Dakota as she looks down, a blush spreading across her cheeks. She's smiling and biting her lip and it takes all of my self-control to keep from kissing her right then. I shake myself out of it and look back at Piper. She's looking at me with a knowing look. "We were going to do some research on the whole dream thing, if you wanted to join us?"
"No, it's fine, but pick up your phone next time." Piper said, standing and giving me a glare to make sure I got the point. She walks over to the door and opens it. "Bye-bye, you two."
I sigh as I watch the door close as she walks out. I look over to Dakota, who's also looking at the door, though she looks kind of overwhelmed.
"You get used to her." I say, standing up and offering a hand. She grabs it and I begin leading her to my bedroom. We both grab our bags. "Now, how about we start researching?"
