𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐋𝐈𝐕𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐑𝐎𝐎𝐌 felt unusually full, like the air itself was buzzing. Aveline stretched out along the couch, her legs draped over Colby's lap while he absentmindedly traced circles on her shin to keep himself calm. Jake sat on the floor beside them, still pale. Hartley and Amy were huddled together, staring at Vic like he'd just told them he was from another planet.
"I still can't believe your dad was a superhero," Hartley said, eyes huge.
Vic threw his hands up. "Why? Because I'm such an uber-cool, rebellious villain?"
"No," Jake said bluntly. "Because you have, like... no muscle tone."
Colby snorted and Aveline smacked his arm lightly, though she was biting back a laugh too.
Vic glared. "Did you ever think that maybe the superheroes took my muscles away along with my power?"
Amy looked at him suspiciously. "Did they?"
"No," he muttered.
Aveline lifted her head slightly from Colby's lap. "Wait, hold on. You sacrificed your actual superpower just to be with Eva?"
Eva nodded softly beside him, threading their fingers together.
"I can't believe you gave up the one thing that made you... you," Hartley said, shocked. "What were you thinking?" She winced. "No offense."
Vic shrugged. "None taken. Besides, I already got my revenge when I made your breakfast."
Colby's face twisted. "That's not sausage."
Jake went rigid. "Hold on, he didn't have the sausage. I did."
Eva blinked. "Oh. Right. Good news, Jake, you're in the clear."
Aveline tossed her head back into Colby's lap with a grin. "Aww, she messed with your food. That means you're family."
Amy crossed her arms. "I thought superheroes were supposed to be good. How could your family make you choose between them and the woman you love?"
Eva raised her hand slowly. "I'm sure my family accepted him better... right?"
"Nope," Vic said. "They wanted to destroy me."
Eva smiled painfully. "He's just really good at hiding."
Aveline eyed Vic's narrow frame. "Yeah, with those muscles, you could hide between two couch cushions."
Hartley groaned dramatically. "This completely changes who we are. We have superhero blood running through our veins."
Jake pulled out his phone. "I know. That's why I was just searching 'Can I live without blood.' Spoiler: it's not looking good."
