Cody's POV:
My sweaty hands grip tight on the present that I am going to give to Mira. Its a box of chocolates. The box is in a heart shape. I walk slowly to her front door. An owl hoots in the distance. And I look at the moon. A full moon. Half moon is coming up.
Suddenly, Mira walks out the front door, her lush brown hair flowing as she sprints. I hide in the shadows, too afraid to approach her. Has she forgiven me? Surely this present will make her forgive me.
I'm too afraid to confront her now. But I'm not afraid to follow her secretly.
Mira runs into the forest, her footsteps light and agile. The night helps me hide in the undergrowth of the forest.
Mira stops in a hollow. A pretty hollow. The stars were bright. The moon was full. The perfect time to confront her. She was alone and that's all I needed to gain my confidence.
I was about to stride out to give her the present when I realized Mira was standing super still. And she was growing a tail and ears.
My heart skipped a beat. Mira was a......Wolfgirl?
I was shocked and my trembling hands dropped the present. It landed softly, the ferns cushioning the present's fall. The hairs on my neck prickled and cold seeped within me. And I ran for it.
I ran as softly and quickly as I can. My heart pounding rapidly. I need to run away from Mira.
Mira's POV:
I yip happily as Storm appears in the hollow. He wags his tail, and we walk ,together, back to camp. Fur brushing, tails entwined.
We arrive at camp and the Alpha barks a greeting. I dip my head. The Alpha howls a hunting howl. The whole pack except the crippled, old, pups, and mothers gather in the middle of camp.
The alpha tells us that a herd of deer was spotted grazing in the meadows and we can hunt one of them in a series of barks.
I wag my tail happily. I love hunting, especially with the whole pack. Moon babysits for Fawn's pups because Fawn decides she wants to go.
We lope through the forest until we find ourselves in the meadow part of our territory. And sure enough, a herd of deer is resting in the center of the meadow, the moonlight of the full moon shining on them.
The Alpha flicks his tail and we split up to even groups. The Alpha leads one group and Fawn leads the second because she is Beta. Storm and I are in the Alpha's group. We run alongside each other and our pack mates. The Alpha softly explains things for the eager pups learning how to hunt as a pack. We target the young male who was limping. The group I'm in stalks toward the deer, using the tall grass as concealment. I can barely see the other group stalking from the other side. The Alpha flicks his ears at two wolves, Bracken and Drizzle and the wolves move from the main group to their own separate group, stalking from behind the deer.
We get as close as the Alpha thinks we can and the Alpha flicks his tail as a signal. Bracken and Drizzle instantly spring from their hiding spot and start running towards the deer. The deer get up to their feet and start running. The fastest ones of the herd in the front, away from danger, the crippled, old and young lagging behind, prone to danger.
The Alpha flicks his ear and Fawn sees the signal. Together, the two groups surge after the targeted deer. Bracken and Drizzle join in our group.
The Alpha leaps on to the deer's back, digging his claws in. I nip at the male deer's legs, daring him to stumble and fall. But the male deer, strong and still young, keeps to his limping rhythm. Drizzle, the fastest runner of our pack runs in front of the deer and clings onto the deer's antlers while trying to slash it's neck. The deer shakes his antler's around, trying to fling Drizzle off.
I take a huge leap and attach my claws to the deer's side. From the corner of my eye, I see a small pup lying behind us on the grass, unmoving. He must have been trampled. I push that image aside and leap off, pushing the deer with all my energy. I land on the floor, running alongside the deer. And nipping at his heels. Suddenly, Drizzle falls down with a Thud! And he rolls side ways. A hoof kicks him on the back and a sharp crack! Could be heard.
The deer stumbles and collapses. Fawn quickly kills the deer. The deer lays limp and we howl a thanks to the deer who's life we have taken away.
The Alpha quickly retrieves Drizzle and carry him by the scruff.
"There's still a pup!" I bark as the pack turns to leave.
The Alpha barks, "go fetch him!"
I quickly bound to the pup and take him by the scruff. The pack runs smoothly back to camp, 4 wolves carrying the deer.
The next day, Drizzle comes out of his den limping, his right hind leg will be crippled and useless forever. He must retire and go to the crippled den where he will spend the rest of his life. The pup, sadly, was killed after being trampled.
Storm and I go to the hollow early so we can have some alone time. He sits by me and I sit by him until the Alpha howls for Storm to come back. Storm goes away and I instantly miss his soft fur and body warmth against mine.
I sniff the air. I smell trees, birds, animals, wolves, a faint trace of Storm, and.......Cody?
I follow the trail scent of Cody, my heart thumping. I find myself staring at a heart-shaped box of chocolates with a heavy scent of Cody. He smells of shock and fear. The scent is still a bit fresh. He was here yesterday night. He must have found out my Wolfgirl secret. The question is, will he call the police?
