Samantha smiled at me that morning. We were alone in the kitchen
It had been about two weeks since the incident, we hadn't talked, except for that day she made the announcement.
I watched as she speed from the cup of coffee she had gradually heated with her hands.
"Hey" I managed
She looked surprised, but replied me any way.
"Hey"
Every one else was still asleep, save Adam and Seth who were on constant night parole. It was five an after all.
I could walk now, unsupported. The burns hardly hurt now, though they were pretty serious.
My manger (acting career), had been calling in for weeks. He wanted to know if I would take up a role in this new movie based on chameleon's life. Chameleon wasn't even this city's hero, I was."So, how are you feeling?" Samantha asked
"Perfect"
"Really?"
"Are all the burns gone?"I shook my head laughing "no"
She looked hurt or was it sorry? I want sure but it looked comical.
"Come on Samantha" I grinned "I feel perfect, is nice talking to you again"
She smiled, it was a ghost of a smile.
"I'm sorry Tucker" she said "wow, I idolised a guy for so long and end up burning his face off"
"That was my fault" I shrugged "I shouldn't have held you"
"You held me?"I paused, to gauge the situation I was getting my self into. She looked plainly curious.
"Yes I held you" I nodded.
She smiled gratefully."do you need help with a drink or a meal? "
"Ummm yah, can you make me some pancakes?"
"Sure thing, sugar" she put on a new Jersey accent
I laughed, she got down to making me break fast, all the time, there was never a time of empty silence.
We talked about her Tucker Langston crush. She blushed, she had loved me since she was seventeen. Then she has no idea she would ever meet me. She wanted to, but she knew deep down in her fan girl world that she would never meet me. If she had known who I was the first time she woke up in the lab, she would have kept her mouth shut and played it cool.
I laughed at that one.
She told me about her college boyfriend and how he must be frantic with worry. She had told a few people that she was crashing with some friends. She hadn't told them where our who these friends were. Still she had wanted to break up with her boy friend ever since she found out he was cheating. She hadn't told him any thing, to him, she had did appeared with out a trace.
She asked me what I liked doing and I told her I liked working out. She said I had a huge ego.
"I don't have a huge ego" I said " I like working out because it makes me feel confident. It makes me confident that I can help people when they need it.""Oh" she said "I love your work" she looked up at me from the batter in the bowl. "Your work as steel"
I closed my eyes and tried to visualise things from Samantha's view. I imagined Samantha sitting out side, at the park maybe and then suddenly I whish past her in the air. I imagine she waves but I never look back because duty calls. I imagine she feels like taking a picture but doesn't because she is giving up on Steel and ever other person she idolises.
"That means a lot to me" I said to her after a while.
She looked at me a very confused look on her face.
"I'm not the only one who looks up to you" she said
"But you are the only one with a personal relationship with me"
She put the pan on fire and began to fry the pancakes."Do I really have a personal relationship with you?" She asked
I didn't answer that question.
"Because you only seem to hate me" she said. " you know, this is the first civil conversation we've had"
"Really?" I fell for the bait.
"Of course it is!"
"I'm sure we talk" I said " we do talk Samantha! "
I couldn't keep the hummour out of my voice. She turned to me the look in her eye almost manic."No we don't Tucker!" She spat out " and stop calling me Samantha! My name is Sam!"
I paused and cocked my head.
"Why?" She said.
"Why what?" I asked.
"Why did you have no opinion on my going to see my brother?" She said
"It doesn't matter does it? If you want to see your brother. It's your business really. Not mine"
She turned back to the pancakes on fire.
"Suppose I tell my brother about you Tucker?"
"Now why would you want to do that?" I asked "all this looks like an elaborate plot to get my attention"
She spun around so quick I thought she would break and then she just glared at me before walking away, leaving me to take care of breakfast. The training room was empty. I walked in, looking around as I did so. There were no signs of what happened about two weeks ago. The equipments damaged by heat had been replaced and every thing looked normal.
I started off with some stretches and then went on the treadmill for about thirty five minutes. All the time I kept thinking about Samantha. I liked her. I really did. I just did not under stand what she wanted. It was pretty obvious she liked me too, at least I thought so because she seemed to value my opinion a lot.
I thought about living in the same house with her and the fact that we might all be infected by the epidemic. I thought about what I would do of Meg died of the disease. I wondered if I would care if Samantha died. I concluded I would.
I got tired after the light work out and decided to get to bed even if it was just eight in the morning and people were just waking up or getting to work. I wanted to catch some sleep and then resume some work in the lab. The burns were very faint now only the one on my chest and the side of my face remained sore and painfully raw. I began to make my way towards my room."Tucker?" Someone was in my room.
"Huh?" I said very dumbly when I saw Samantha seated on my bed.
"Tucker I don't understand you" she said.
"Nor I you.....you're in my bed"
"I'm sitting on your bed"
"Do you want to be in it?" I asked grinning stupidly and dropping beside her on the bed."Tucker I want to be open about something that we are both very sure of but are acting too stupid to act on" she said straight faced.
"What?"
"I like you Tucker and I want to see where that leads" she said.
"Well I don't like you" I said and shrugged.
She looked hurt, destroyed even.
"I love you and I'm sure of it" I continued
Her eyes snapped to meet mine.
"Then Tucker, why these games?" She asked quietly.
"Because I want to figure out why your very unattractive self makes me a different person" I said shrugging like it was nothing. Inside me I was jumping. Where would this lead?
"Different how?"
"I burnt my self to save you” I said " I lost my mask and traveled my self to you in the process. You know my only weakness is fire now, so what's not so different?"
"Tell me you wouldn't have saved me if I were some one else?"
"Then I guess I would be in love with that someone else"She looked at me like I was the strangest thing she had ever seen before getting up and looking back at me. Her expression was passive but imploring.
"That's it Tucker" she said "kiss me or end this game"
I raised a brow.
"Kiss me or end it Tucker!" She said again.I looked her in the eyes and pulled her to me as I got up and made our lips meet. She wimpered in surprise and then placed her hands slowly around my neck. The burn on the side of my face stung as we kissed. It was a hot, exploring kiss. It was new, alien and wonderfull.
She drew closer to me and I slid my hand down her figure less body and pulled her closer till I could feel every part of her body being pressed into me.
This was what I should have done a long time again.
Till today, I am glad she wanted to make the first move.Hope you are enjoying the book.
