it had been one of those days at the shop where the machines never stopped buzzing.
she was bouncing from one client to the next, gloves snapping, ink caps clinking, and her sketchbook was smeared with little doodles & half-finished ideas.
she'd already done a butterfly on some girl's shoulder blade, a skeleton on a guy's hand, a scripture on some girl's forearm, a spine tattoo, and now she was finishing up a rose sleeve.
the girl in her chair winced a little but smiled through it. "you're heavy-handed but i loveeee it. lowkey makes me feel like it's really gonna stay forever."
sai'elle laughed under her mask. "i promise it's gonna stay. you'll be eighty years old and that rose is still gonna be right here. just... probably wrinkled."
the girl cracked up then asked, "do you ever get tired of it?"
"of what?" sai'elle asked finishing up.
"like tattooing all day?"
"nah," sai'elle shook her head, wiping gently at the skin.
"if i wasn't tattooing, i'd still be drawing. i just like seeing people leave happy, you know? like they came in regular but they leave happier."
the girl nodded. "that's dope. i love that."
sai'elle nodded in reply.
"ou i'll definitely be back." the girl said softly.
when the session wrapped, sai'elle gave her the aftercare rundown and watched her bounce out the door.
she was still smiling at her arm like it was a trophy but that was her 5th client of the day.
she was so tired and hungry.
sai was cleaning her station humming softly to the song she had playing when the little bell above the door jingled again.
she looked up expecting amari to be coming back in but she saw who it was, her whole face lit up.
"bitch omg? amiyah?"
her cousin walked in grinning, already pulling her xs knotless down to her ass boheni braids into a ponytail. "yup it's me. i know you missed me cause you ain't seen me in a minute."
sai'elle tossed her gloves in the trash and practically ran her over. "girl a minute? try forever. where the hell you been?"
amiyah laughed, flopping into the tattoo chair like she owned it. "i been in new orleans but i just moved. packed all my stuff and left. i live in san antonio now."
sai'elle leaned back against the counter. "wait what? you moved to texas and didn't tell nobody? aye still closer than louisiana."
"i know i needed a change. nola was cool, but it was time."
