You knew something wasn't feeling right lately between the two of you. Distance. Literally and figuratively. He was always away filming something with his little friends. You knew you weren't the only woman in his life. Every time you two had a conversation, which became harder and harder to do, the fire that was once burning so bright, was now dim. You felt like you should confront him about it, to tell him you didn't think you two would last.
You hadn't properly spoken to him in a few weeks when he asked to talk to you. You knew it was coming. You had been mentally preparing yourself for this conversation and you thought you had it in the bag. To let go of this two year relationship and walk away without a tear. To forget this, forget him and move on. Maybe you could find someone who doesn't spend their whole life working, which is all he ever does, and listen to you for once.
"Sweetheart. Can I talk to you?" Tom asked you gently one evening while you were washing dishes. You wiped your hands off and followed him to the table.
As you sat down across from him and you reached for his hand, but he pulled away before you could touch him. "I've been thinking, we've had so many wonderful times together but we just haven't been connecting the way that we used to," he started sternly, "and I think it would be best if we stopped seeing each other."Your heart jumped in your throat. You knew this would happen. Why should you be upset? You said to yourself.
"I agree," your voice sounded like you were about to cry, and you were.
He gave out a shaky breath, "Just know that I will always have a special place in my heart for you. I'll miss you."
You nodded, slightly. "Goodbye Thomas." You got to your feet and walked into your room. He left shortly after and you thought it was safe to curl up in your bed and let yourself cry. Stop. Stop. You wanted this. It's for the best. You tried to believe yourself. How it would be possible to move on from him. Watch his life go on without you. Perfectly happy. You could do it. You tried to believe, and after a while, you started to.
