As they were talking about the dojo, a knock came at the door. "I came to see how Kye is doing."
"Father!" Kye ran over to him and jumped into his arms. "I'm okay!"
"You said you were in pain when you left the dungeon, and your mother made it out to be pretty bad."
"It was, but Hannah knows the right magic to alleviate the phantom pain."
He looked over at Hannah with a smile and said, "Thank you."
"Of course. I'd do anything for my grandchild to feel better."
As he looked around the room, Akane stepped up to him, glaring with a not-so-happy smile.
"H-Hello, Mother."
"Three years, son," she said.
He looked away, a bead of sweat rolling down his face. "That long?"
"You look at me, Zen Akari!"
Kye hopped down from her father's arms and went to stand next to Ginchiyo as Akane put the king in his place.
"Your father comes to see me at least once a month. Your sister stays with me most of the time. My sister visits, my brother visits, Rika's mother visits, Liliana and Aliana's mother visits, even your wife's side of the family visits! Layla and James came to see me two weeks ago! My Mother," she gestured at Ginchiyo, "stays in the dojo whenever she's not here with the children!"
"M-Mother, please..."
"Your daughter went to an unimaginable extreme just to get permission to see me! Yet my own son won't visit more than once every few years?"
"Mother, please, I-"
In a flash, faster than the blink of an eye, Akane drew the wooden sword at her left hip and smacked her son square on his head, then kicked him through the door and closed it on him.
"Hmph."
Kye giggled and pulled at Akane's kimono sleeve. "Has he been like that for a long time?"
"Yes, a long time," Akane replied. She turned and patted Kye's head. "On the other hand, you went through so much just to do what he doesn't. You're such a good granddaughter!"
"Hear hear!" Ginchiyo cheered while patting Liliana and Aliana's heads. "All six of them are great kids!"
A knock came at the door, and almost automatically Akane turned toward the door and shouted, "Go away, Zen!"
The door opened, and Akane was ready to kick him away, but it wasn't him. Instead, it was Rika's mother Kanade, one of the council members that witnessed Kye's performance in the dungeon in person. "Aka-nee, it's just me."
"Oh, Kana-chan."
"I wanted to check up on Kye and pick up Rika." She bent down to eye level with Kye, who was still standing next to Akane. "How are you feeling? You were talking about pain when you left the dungeon, and then Layla sent a message saying it was pretty bad."
Kye held a hand to the back of her head and laughed dryly. "It's okay now. Hannah knows the right medical magic to help."
Kanade looked up at Hannah and smiled. "It's disappointing that she had to go so far for this, but I'm glad you're able to see her now," she glanced back at Akane, "both of you."
Hannah returned her smile and Akane added, "Thank you, Kana-chan."
"What are we going to do, Mother?" Rika asked.
Kanade smiled at her daughter and said, "What you've been asking about."
"Dying my hair?"
"Yes. We have an appointment at Izanagi Palace in about two hours. I arranged for the best hairstylist in New Tokyo."
