Bone Ash

The flames had long since died down, but the smoke still rose, thick and sluggish. It reached into the dark sky, curling around the stars as if trying to blot them out. (Y/n) sat perched on a chunk of stone that might once have been a corner of someone's hearth, arms resting limply over her knees. The rock was still warm beneath her body.

Around her, the night was quiet, the brittle, aching kind that follows violence. No bodies remained. No survivors. No voices rose through the smoke. Only the wind moved, sighing through blackened beams, carrying the faint groan of ruins settling into ash. Now and then, a charred rafter gave way with a sharp crack as it crumbled. The ground was dusted in a pale, unsettling powder that clung to the grey rubble, too fine, too white, too much like bone.

They had arrived too late.

What had once been a village was now little more than a powder and blackened ribs of buildings, silhouetted against a low orange glow.

The fire had done its work with frightening precision, efficient and purposeful. The stench still clung to the back of (Y/n)s throat: smoke, scorched meat, singed cloth, and something bitter that made her eyes sting.

No tracks. No bodies. No trace of nightblades. Only hollow houses split open to the stars.

It was the second village in four days.

Her fingers curled against her lap, a slight, unconscious tremor.

Behind, the others drifted through the wreckage like shades of the dead. Namjoon crouched beside the blackened stump of a bell tower, his expression cut in shadow, eyes narrowed as he studied the frayed remains of a rope burned down to threads.

Seokjin stood a few paces beyond him, arms folded, silent as stone. Somewhere to the left, Yoongi sifted quietly through the ruins of a house, stepping over fallen beams and scorched debris with slow, methodical care. None of them spoke.

Jungkook had wandered further than the rest of their group. His silhouette glided between the crumbling husks of buildings, half-draped in swirls of smoke and the flickering glow of dying embers. (Y/N) watched intently as he gradually disappeared down the desolate street, the sound of his footsteps fading until he rounded a corner, swallowed by the night.

She couldn't tell how long she'd been sitting there, minutes perhaps, or an hour. Time had blurred, drawn out heavy and thick like honey sliding slowly from a jar, until each second seemed to stretch into eternity. Her breath escaped in a long, uneven exhale, chest tight, lungs refusing to loosen.

The thought clung to her with a cruel weight: they were always arriving just a little too late.

With a heavy sigh, she reached into the depths of her pocket, her fingers curling around the small silver ring, still waiting to be given to Taehyung. The metal felt cold and uncomfortable against her skin. She rubbed her thumb over its engraved edge, finding solace in the rhythmic motion as it steadied her racing pulse.

Still nothing. No signs. No screams. No trace of the lives that had once filled this place.

All that remained was a thick haze of smoke and the heavy weight of failure settling in her bones.

They had been tracking this group for nightblades for over a week now, following the trail of scorched villages, hoping quietly and desperately that this time they'd actually find them and not the destruction.

After the invasion, the Second Kingdom had splintered like shattered glass across the land. What had once been a unified force had broken apart into swarms: scattered military bands, roving outlaws, and blades gathered into smaller companies.

Each group moved with ruthless efficiency, often commanded by a dayblade, or, at times, by a lesser nightblade, one who had slipped through the monastery's grasp or gone without proper training.
