"Mason, you ready?" I call to the other room.
"Yes!" He yells and then I hear the quick slap of his sneakers against the floor.
He bursts into view, Spider-Man shoes lighting up with every step.
"Slow down, baby." Beyoncé chuckles walking behind him with Jojo on her hip.
"School!" He exclaims as if that explains why he's sprinting.
"Keep that same energy in 10 years." I tell him.
"Okay!" He nods like he knows exactly what I'm talking about.
Beyoncé hands him his backpack.
"Have a good day at school, Mace. Be good, okay?" She says brushing a crumb off his cheek.
"Okay!" He smiles again and wraps both arms around her leg. "Bye!"
He rushes to the door.
"Mason, you didn't say bye to your sister." I remind him.
He gasps like he just broke a law.
"Sorry!"
Beyoncé puts Jojo on the floor and he kisses her cheek.
"Bye Jojo." He says softly.
Jojo pulls her fingers from her mouth just long enough to scream and wave.
The sound makes Mason giggle.
Beyoncé pulls me into a quick kiss.
"Love you." She tells me.
"Love you, too." I smile.
Mason's still laughing as he grabs my hand.
His shoes flash red and blue again as we head for the door.

When we get to campus, he wiggles impatiently while I unbuckle him from his car seat.
As we walk to class, he trots beside me, holding my hand.
His backpack bounces behind him.
"School." he says.
"Yeah, baby. School."
We walk the familiar path.
Mason knows exactly how to get to the lecture hall.
He points.
"Here."
"Good memory." I smile.
Inside the hallway, a few students nod hello.
One girl waves.
He tucks his chin, both shy and pleased with the attention.
As we enter, Professor Smith looks up from his desk and grins.
