*Flashback*

"Mom, I'm already up to date on my shots. I even got my flu shot... what am I going to the doctor for?" Natalie asked as she climbed into the passenger seat of her mother's car, confused about what she was missing.

"Sweetheart, if you're going to insist on leaving us and go all the way across the world." Sabrina Carver spoke ignoring the eye roll she received for her dramatics. "Then you have to go get checked out by a real doctor, not one of those 'hippy dippy' LA doctors."

Natalie knew that her mother was not joking, neither of her parents had positive feelings about her leaving home after graduation to go out West. It was a conversation that had run dry by now, there was nothing left to say.

"Okay I guess, but I'm going even if he tells you I'm dying." Natalie spoke with a quiet steadiness. She never spoke out against her parent's wishes, but her move was not up for negotiation.

"He's just going to look you over, and you are going to get a needle. You're going to get Depo-Provera ... the birth control shot." Sabrina was uncomfortable talking about this and the awkward silence she got in response proved she wasn't the only one that did not want to talk about this. "Your father and I agreed that it was a good idea, better to be safe than sorry."

"Dad?! You talked to Dad about this? Mom, I don't need that. Trust me, I'm not going to be ... doing that." Natalie was mortified. She couldn't help the full body blush that accompanied her discomfort.

She was as close as a teenage girl could get to her parents, but they were very old fashioned. There were certain things they didn't talk about, especially not with her father. Her only consolation was that it seemed her brothers were not privy to this conversation, she would never hear the end of it if they were.

"I know, I know. But this is important. Just get it, please Alie?" Sabrina asked earnestly, knowing her daughter would not be able to say no.

"Okay." Natalie answered, letting a silence fall over the car; each woman content to sit and think to themselves for the rest of the drive.

The appointment was fairly uneventful. There was the usual checkup, some blood work, the shot, and it ended in a lot of questioning. It was clear to Natalie that her mother had asked the Doctor to do what he could to convince her that she would be better off staying in New York.

"You'll have to get this again when you come home for Christmas break." Sabrina had casually mentioned in a pathetic attempt to see if her daughter was even planning on coming back when she had time off.

"Every three months, he told me. Besides, I'd have to come back anyway, who else is going to make sure Joe doesn't set the Christmas tree on fire again?" Both women laughed at the memory of the eldest Carver son nearly burning the house down two years prior.

"You are the only one he listens to." Sabrina remarked fondly.

Once back home, Natalie raced upstairs to her room. She had been in the middle of packing and organizing when her mother pulled her away for a last minute appointment. She would be taking very little with her, but she genuinely enjoyed taking the time to fold and refold every item.

Time passed slowly for Natalie, but her excitement never wavered. She was confident that going West would help her find her life's purpose. 'A new school and a fresh start.' Was her mantra. She just had to survive the last few weeks of high school and then she would finally be free.
