Time had passed, months since Ranger had been eagerly welcomed back into the team. And since then, the troops have begun to loosen up around Commander. They loosened up enough for Medic to excitedly pull him and DJ to the side one evening, a glint in her eyes.
Engineer was trailed behind ever so slightly, looking abashed. "So, Commander, DJ...Engi and I have big, big news to share with you!" Medic, surprisingly chipper, announced. Commander shared a suspicious glance with DJ, who raised a brow in confusion.
"What...is it?" DJ piped up. Maybe Medic found the cure to cancer. Or perhaps Engineer created a Time Machine? Or maybe that was just wishful thinking.
"Well," Medic pulled Engineer closer, grinning wide, "we're dating!" Engineer winced, immediately pulling her hands to her face and peeking through her fingers. She must've been terrified for Commander's reaction, DJ realized.
Commander was silent for a solid thirty seconds, evidently processing the emotions that came with such an announcement: that your sister was finally dating her crush of a year and a half.
"I see."
Was that really all he had to say?!
"Isn't this exciting, Commander?" Medic's face softened into a look of mild confusion. "I know you have been rooting for us since I told you."
That was true. DJ knew from countless conversations about the two ladies, that Medic had been crushing on the other woman for god knows how long, and that she had been worried sick about whether or not it was reciprocated. But, thankfully, from DJ's own personal experience with Engineer, it most certainly was.
"It is, very. I'm happy for you two." Commander smiled back at her. Medic, accepting of this response, smiled in response, a relieved smile — one that showed gratitude for Commander's acceptance. Engineer let out a genuine sigh of relief, muscles relaxing. DJ knew she was holding her breath the whole time, surely, nervous that Commander would reject their love.
Medic clasped Commander's hands, looking awfully thankful. She whispered something soft, but DJ was close enough to hear it, "Thanks, Sammy."
Commander turned pink, looking off to the side with a huff. "It's the least I can do. I wish you two a bright future together."
Sammy?
DJ raised a brow.
Medic dipped her head in thanks before pulling away. "Well, the two of us have to go tell the others! I wanted to tell you two first, because I know you have been hoping."
DJ smiled at the women, the thought of what Medic whispered still in his head.
Soon enough, the couple was gone, leaving the other couple to themselves once more. DJ turned to Commander and asked, "What was with the hesitation?"
"I'm...protective, maybe," Commander eventually admitted. "She's still my sister. I can't just let her go like that. This is like if Scout told me he was dating someone! I'm protective, that's all."
...
"Right." DJ scratched his forearm sheepishly. He forgot Commander had no idea about Minigunner and Scout... "You know Medic can handle herself just fine. She's a competent woman."
"I know that," he sighed. He side-eyed DJ, as if to say "are you calling me stupid?".
"I know you know that, silly. I'm just telling you, she will be okay. I promise."
Commander nodded solemnly. "You're correct. I need to be less protective of her. She...doesn't need me."
"Hey, that's not what I'm saying. She needs you as much as anyone would need their little brother. What I'm saying is that Medic is a woman who can handle herself, she's not necessarily in need of protection. Ya know?"
