Phil didn't notice that Dan had been keeping a distance until they stopped to make camp and Dan flinched when they touched hands. Phil frowned but ignored the fear of Dan and walked off to find some food for the night. He doubted he would find much because they had been forced to stay in a place that wasn't ideal.
While Phil was away, Dan took the time to wonder about him. He was obviously frightened by his powers, but he knew that Phil was kind to him, and it was clear that Dan cared for Phil. He decided that he didn't know enough about Phil's powers to judge him on them yet. For all he knew, Phil was protecting him by attacking the woman.
Phil spent about twenty minutes searching for food, but the closest thing he found was a few berries and he wasn't sure if they were poisonous or not. Eventually, he did something he usually hated doing - he listened out for wildlife and stopped in his spot when he heard a squirrel scutter past. Cautiously, he approached it with his hand raised and his eyes wide open. He clenched his fingers back against his palm and looked down at the small creature as it fell over - dead. He hated killing animals but he knew that it was sometimes essential to keep him alive. At least the squirrel didn't feel pain. Phil picked it up by its coarse tail and carried it back to where Dan was, a pang of regret in his stomach.
When Phil arrived, Dan noticed the upset look on his face and kept quiet, his eyes travelling to the dead animal that was by his side. Neither spoke as Phil started the fire and stepped behind a tree for five minutes, emerging with a now skinned squirrel. He placed it on the fire and sat a few metres from Dan, not wanting to engage a conversation. He knew that Dan was frightened of him and didn't want to have to talk about it.
