Once the meat had started cooking, Dan edged closer to Phil and leaned against him. Phil was shocked that Dan wanted to be anywhere near him, and smiled at him before turning his head to look at him.
"How's your chest now?" Phil asked, realising he hadn't checked up on Dan since Azia had turned up.
"Fine, it doesn't hurt much from the - from Maria, I don't know - I think I'm okay now," Dan stuttered out in reply while he avoided eye contact with Phil. Phil took this chance to ask Dan if he knew why Maria had attacked him. When Dan replied to say that he didn't know, Phil tried to push his theories and thoughts out of his head for now.
"Tell me about you," Dan said and Phil racked his brain for something interesting. He was just Phil. He didn't know what else to say.
"I don't know, I'm just - Phil. I'm from Ashenes. That's all really."
"That can't be all! Tell me all about you - your favourite colours and your family and why the hell you're in this forest, miles away from home," Dan said, laughing when Phil scrunched his nose up at each question. It was adorable.
"I like white," Phil was about to answer the rest of his questions but was interrupted by Dan.
"White? Really, Phil? That's hardly even a colour."
"WHAT'S WRONG WITH WHITE?" Phil exclaimed, crossing his arms and pouting out his lower lip at Dan. Dan shook his head in response and told him to answer the other questions.
"As I was saying before I was so rudely interrupted, my favourite colour is white. As for family, I have one brother - he's older than me. That's basically my family summed up. And I'm here because I was banished from Ashenes because they thought I was dangerous," Phil answered although he knew that his last answer didn't at all summarise why he was forced to leave home. Without even being prompted, Dan began to give his own answers to the questions.
"You know who I am and where I'm from, but otherwise my favourite colour is blue because I am a normal human being with normal favourite colours" Phil chuckled at this answer.
"I have one little brother and an overbearing mother and a father with expectations way too big for me to achieve. And I'm here because I came here with Maria after class to kiss her and she did something when we kissed."
Phil nodded at each of his answers and yawned as he looked at the fire with the squirrel burning on it. Too tired to get up, he blinked a few times before pressing his palm to the ground and smiling as the squirrel floated through the air to him. Grabbing it out of the air, he took a knife from his pocket and cut it in two. He gave Dan the bigger piece and warned him to pick out the bones because he could choke on them.
The pair of them ate their food while the sun set and when the night came overhead, Dan pointed out all the constellations in the sky to Phil. Leaning his head on Phil's chest, Dan fell asleep in his arms.
