Song of the chapter -
"I like surprises," he said, stepping inside without waiting for permission.
He dropped the helmet on the floor by the door with a casual thud. The scent of rain and musk followed him in. She watched — stupidly — as he moved like he belonged here. Like the space was familiar. He opened the fridge, eyes scanning its contents.
"Red? That's cute. But I'm in the mood for soju."
"Help yourself," she said tightly, leaning back on the counter. He grabbed the chilled green bottle and popped the cap with ease. Took a sip straight from it, eyes never leaving hers. "So... you gonna tell me what that song was about?"
Kyomi blinked.
She said nothing, just tipped her glass again.
Jaehyun stepped closer. His shirt clung to his chest, open enough that the hard lines of his abs were visible when he moved. His arms caged her in — palms flat against the marble on either side of her hips.
The wine in her veins burned slightly hotter.
He leaned forward, his voice velvet. "You still sing like that when you're in bed?"
She flinched.
But not away.
His breath was warm.
Her pulse jumped. "You're disgusting," she whispered, but didn't move.
"You're not moving," he murmured. Her breath caught. "What are you doing here?" she asked, finally — voice fragile, but direct. "You looked at me differently at the ball. When I asked you to dance..." He tilted his head. "You remembered something."
Kyomi swallowed. He wasn't wrong. But she didn't confirm it. Instead, she reached for the wine glass on the counter beside her, but he beat her to it. He took it, held it up — and drank. From her glass. The ruby stain of her lip gloss visible on the rim.
"Jaehyun..." she warned.
"I just wanted a taste."
The tension hung — taut and glimmering — between them.
He was too close.
And he knew it.
"You always did hate how well I knew you," he added, lower now. "But you forget, I knew what kind of night you'd have before you did. I know when your voice shakes. When you lie."
She stared up at him, jaw tight.
But she didn't push him away.
He leaned in—cheek close to hers. Not touching, just near enough for her to feel the heat of him.
"Are you afraid I'll ruin everything again?"
"You already did," she whispered. His smile was painful. Crooked. Beautiful. And bitter.
For one suspended second, she thought he might kiss her.
His lips hovered just shy of hers — but then he pulled back.
A millimeter.
Still too close.
"I came to say goodbye," he said suddenly. That threw her. "Goodbye?"
"For now." He took another swig of the soju, looking over her shoulder, then back to her. "But you'll see me again. Soon." "Why?"
"Because unfinished things always circle back."
And just like that — he leaned down, pressed a kiss to the underside of her jaw. A fleeting brush of heat and chaos.
She shivered.
"Sweet dreams, Kyomi."
He grabbed his helmet, winked, and disappeared into the hallway.
The door shut with a final, haunting click.
