THE ART OF ADULTING (MALEC AU)

Magnus tossed the papers into the air, letting them float to the ground around him. Alec looked up from the computer, raising his eyebrows at his boyfriend.

"Why is paying bills so difficult?" the older man complained, crossing his arms like a petulant child. "I don't like being an adult, Alexander."

"Well you can't go back in time," Alec replied, carefully picking up the sheets of paper that had arrived in the mail. "Now calm down. If you sort dinner out, I'll finish doing the accounting." When he looked at Magnus, he noticed the Chinese takeout menu in his hands. "Magnus, you can cook yourself. We're going to end up wasting money on takeout if you buy some every single night."

Magnus pouted but placed the menu down on the coffee table. "Will Mexican be alright then, Alexander?"

"Fajitas sound nice," Alec said distractedly as he concentrated on the numbers in front of him. Magnus smiled before beginning to prepare everything. There were benefits to being friends with Raphael, and the recipes he provided was one of them.

Alec finished up paying the bills and glanced up. There was something incredibly sexy about seeing his boyfriend rushing around the kitchen with flour in his hair and a frantic look in his golden eyes. After a few moments, Magnus glanced up and smirked at the younger man.

"Is there something you like, Alexander?" he asked, raising his eyebrows. Alec smirked back at him, taking his boyfriend by surprise.

"The flour in your hair," Alec said as he stood, and saw Magnus's cheeks turn a faint shade of pink. "Those eyes, your hands." He took Magnus's slender hands in his own, running his fingers over the knuckles. "The way you laugh. The way you kiss me."

Magnus smiled, leaning down to kiss Alec. It was times like this he was glad he had a few inches on Alec, as it meant that his boyfriend had to tilt his head upwards and extend his toes a little bit and Magnus loved it.

"Like that?" he said as he pulled away, a smile on his face. Alec grinned at him just as a shrill blaring echoed throughout the house. Alec began laughing while Magnus attempted to stop the smoke billowing from their oven. "Oh god, I can't even cook us dinner. I am a horrible excuse for an adult."

"It's fine," Alec said gently, managing to stop the smoke and turn of the alarm. He'd learnt all the tips and tricks of the trade because of his sister's horrible cooking. "We'll get takeout."

Magnus smiled sheepishly as Alec cleaned the kitchen, his movements practiced and methodical. Magnus took it upon himself to order the Chinese, knowing exactly what his boyfriend would have asked for anyway.

The couple spent the rest of their night on the couch, snuggled up with Chinese takeout and Netflix. There was something oddly romantic about the scenario, Magnus thought as Alec's light snores echoed and his sleeping body shifted. Daredevil was playing in the background, but Magnus was too busy watching his sleeping boyfriend. Alec had quickly fallen asleep once Magnus had turned the TV show on, but Magnus knew superhero movies and shows made him fall asleep. There was no reason why, they just did.

Magnus hadn't even realised he'd fallen asleep until he woke up at seven in the morning and panicked. Spongebob was starting, and he hadn't woken Alec up or made cookie crunch!

"Alexander," he said, shaking Alec's shoulders. The younger man groaned, burying his face deeper into Magnus's side. "Alexander, we're missing cookie crunch and Spongebob! Wake up!"

Alec's eyelids fluttered, and he gazed blearily up at Magnus. "Spongebob?"

"And cookie crunch," Magnus agreed. Alec smiled sleepily at him, pushing himself up into a sitting position. "Come on, you switch the channel and I'll get the cereal."

Alec nodded, grabbing the remote and turning the TV to the cartoon channel. The familiar yellow face covered the screen, and Magnus heard Alec humming the theme song as the cartoon started. He poured two bowls of cookie crunch and added milk before grabbing spoons and sitting down beside Alec.

The pair spent the morning on the couch watching cartoons and eating kid's cereal. It was an escape from adulthood, and they were going to enjoy it for as long as they could.
