.
"What do you suggest we do?" I turn to Harry as we sit on the curb. The cold air of this place called Washington whips against our faces and I pull Harry's flannel tighter around me. He must be cold now. I scoot closer to him and nuzzle up to his side. He puts his arm around me and grabs a french fry out of the bag.
"I don't know. I mean, we've got more money than we know what to do with."
I want to ask something, but I've made a mental pact to never talk about Bambi again. But, I can't be the only one that's curious. "Harry?" I call him and he looks down at me. "Do you think Bambi," I pause and swallow hard, "do you think she knew about this place?"
He purses his lips, considering the question. "Maybe. I can't say for sure, but she did seem to know exactly where to direct us and how much money to give us. She's a smart girl. She wouldn't just get us out of there to go back to the hell we were already living in. You know what I mean?"
I nod in agreement. But, if she knew about it, why in the hell is she still working in that prison? She could be free out here.
Suddenly, something she said to me in the library comes to mind.
"I need to stay here." She'd said. "The prisoners need a kind face every now and then. And, who knows, some more roses might wind up in here, in this field of thorns, that I need to help save."
She knows about this place. She knows she could be happy here, but she chooses to stay to help people like us. Maybe I had misjudged her. She's an angel. But she's a troubled one. Staying there is obviously torture for her. At least, I'm assuming it is, given the cuts we saw on her wrists. She's clearly not happy.
"Maybe she didn't want to leave her sister all alone in that world. Maybe one day, when her sister is finally gone, she'll come here and be happy." I suggest.
Harry smiles down at me and kisses my forehead. "That's a nice thought."
I hear a paper bag being crumpled up and I look over at the rest of our group. Louis stands from the curb and brushes himself off. "Are you guys ready to go?" He asks as Liam throws away their trash.
"Go where?"
"Home, I guess."
He has a point. How do you even buy a home in this place? We didn't have to buy homes in Paix. We were just assigned to them. I would imagine that's not the case in Olympia, Washington.
"We're going to need to find someone that will help us with all of this." Harry says.
"Right. And what do you suggest we tell them? Hello, we've just come from another world and we would very much like it if you'd tell us how to live in this one." Louis says and scoffs. "People will think we're insane."
Another good point. I think the first thing we should do is get a car. We can't travel everywhere on foot. I'll die.
"Harry, can I see the backpack?" I ask and he hands it over to me. He stands and carries on conversation with the rest of the group while I rummage through the bag. Bambi wouldn't have left us completely in the dark. There has to be something in here that will help us.
It's so ridiculous. We don't even have a moment to enjoy our freedom before we have to start worrying about something else.
I open the smallest zipper pocket and find our phones. I furrow my eyebrows. How on Earth did she manage to glaze over that fact when first showing us the contents of the backpack? Maybe she thought they'd be a distraction during our escape.
