"Yeah, I'll be there." I said as I helped Macey get her shoes on. "No, make it an hour. I'm about to leave for lunch with Macey." A pause. "Yeah, see you later. Bye."

I hung up and placed the home phone back in the receiver. Macey smiled at me. "Who was that? Your boyfriend?"

I rolled my eyes. "Wouldn't you like to know. Come on, we need to hurry."

She finished tying her shoes and stood up. We hurried out of the house and walked along the sidewalk. "So, where do you want to go?" I asked.

"It's your birthday. Where do you want to go?" Macey asked.

"I don't know. I don't really care. It's up to you."

"Hm... How about Wendy's?" She smiled. "You can get that shake you really like."

I wanted to just squeeze her so tight and tell her she was the perfect sister. She always looked out for me. "Sure."

We headed over and I we looked at the menu. In the end, Macey got a cheeseburger meal and I got a wrap with a shake, adding a small frosty for Macey at the end. To be honest, with our budget, this was like a feast for kings. We both smiled as we got our food and picked a table at the back.

As we sat down Macey asked, "So does Kyle know it's your birthday?"

I shrugged. "Yeah, I told him. He flipped out." I shook my head. "But, get this, he didn't tell me when his was? I thought he'd tell me."

She giggled. "I bet if he told you you'd have been like, 'Why are you telling me this? I don't care.'." She said it with a funny deep voice and I scoffed. "I would not!"

"Yes, you would! You did it to him all the time before." She took a sip of her lemonade. "No lying, Kayson."

I snorted and bit into my wrap. I denied it but, when I thought back to when we first met what Macey said was true. I had been very shadowed back then. I wouldn't let anything get into my life, afraid to be hurt.

"So, what do you want for your birthday?" I pulled out of my thoughts and glanced at Macey. "What? No, you don't have to do that."

"But, I want to. You always get me a barbie for my birthday but, I never get you anything. Can't it be something small? I've been saving up." She gave me puppy eyes.

"Macey, don't waste your money on me. You should keep it and use it for something you want." I said with a smile.

She frowned and sat back. Then she perked up and smile. "I know! Remember that little bracelet that I pointed out to you at the one store? I can get you that, right? You said you liked it and it's not expensive at all."

I started to protest again but, she pouted and I sighed, shaking my head with a smile. "Aright. But, only because I hate seeing you upset."

She smiled brightly and leaned over, kissing my cheek. "I knew you'd say yes!" She said excitedly.

I chuckled and told her to finish her food. We ate and talked and had what we'd called a birthday celebration for years. It was perfect just like that.

When we finished our lunch we ran over to the store with the bracelets and I picked one out. Macey insisted on paying and I agreed with the plan to stick the $1.50 back in her little purse when she wasn't looking.

I put the bracelet on and she beamed. "Do you like it?" She asked.

I hugged her and ruffled her hair. "I love it. Thanks, Macey."

After that we made our way to Kyle's. I slowed as we neared the house, wondering what that ass had planned. I swore if he intended to jump out at me with a stupid popper I'd kill him and bury him in his own backyard. I hated surprises.
