SUNDAY... TWO WEEKS LATER

“He’s selling the house.”  Kayla’s dad repeated.

Kayla shrugged.  She was trying to convince herself that she was over Mr. Emery, now as she heard the news that he was never coming back she couldn’t help but think that maybe she did miss him a little.  It had almost been over two weeks since Scott, Mr. Emery, had suddenly packed up.

“It’s better that way.”  Kayla finally said.  Her mom looked at her lovingly from the other side of the table.  After Scott had left Kayla and her mother had had a long talk.  Kayla had told her everything…about the date, her feelings about Scott, and her broken heart.

“Did you ever try calling him?”  Her mom asked.

Kayla shook her head and slumped further into the couch in the living room.  “It’s better this way.”  Kayla repeated.

Her mom and dad looked at each other and then her dad cleared his throat.  “We’ve been thinking Kayla.  Emma will be here tomorrow and she’ll be staying for about a week.  She’ll then be going home and her fiancé will be going back to his home state for a few weeks.  We thought it’d be good for you to go with Emma.  You know, you could have some sister time before she gets married again…Tom won’t be around to bother you two.”  Her mom and dad then looked at each other again and then back to Kayla.

“I have my store.”  Kayla interjected although the thought of leaving for a few weeks did sound appealing.

“We’ll take care of it sweetheart.”  Her mom said.

“I can’t just leave.”  Kayla said as she tried to grasp onto the last little bits of her sanity.

“Just think about honey.”  Her dad added as he stood and left the living room.

MONDAY

Kayla watched as Emma stepped out of the rental car her and Tom had rented for their week’s stay.  The first thing Kayla noticed was Emma’s hair.  Emma had always had the most beautiful curly blonde hair that Kayla had ever seen but now as Emma ran to her mother and embraced her Kayla was shocked by it’s color…red, red hair with a dark black streak running through her bangs.

There were other noticeable changes as well.  The multiple piercing on both of her ears, the black tank she was wearing, the short shorts, Kayla was used to seeing Emma as a pink frilly girl.  Emma was wearing dark makeup and there, there on her ankle was a little tattoo of a skull.  This was not the Emma she remembered.

Sure, Kayla respected people for who they were.  She might not agree with all the new styles out there but she didn’t mind that people chose to express themselves in different ways.  But Emma?  Emma was so…so…girly.

Tom stepped out of the car next and Kayla studied him.  One of his ears was pierced and he dressed head to toe in black.  His shaggy hair was black as well.  He looked ruff but Kayla tried to ignore the unsettled feeling she was feeling in her gut.  This was never the type of man Kayla had imagined her sister marring.  Tom was even worse than Emma’s first husband Henry.
