It didn't take all that long to get to the Northern Air temple. It took the whole night and well into the next day. It was nearly sunset when the temple came into view. After we got off we were greeted by a group of people. There were a couple of children, a tall man with an arrow who was holding a woman's hand, and a few other people, including someone who was dressed like they were from one of the water tribes.
"You must be Opal and Ava. I'm Tenzin." He greeted us like an ancient airbender would.
"Yeah. I'm Opal, and this is Ava. It's great to be learning from an actual Master. Ava is talented but she is no master." Opal said.
"I've always been interested in airbending and the history of the airbender. I have been since I was very little. When I discovered I could airbend after the Harmonic convergence I took quickly to it." I told him. I knew why my mom hadn't told him. He already had a family. If only I had let her explain. I wouldn't feel this pit in my stomach right now.
"I'm glad to hear that someone was interested in our culture. None of the other new airbenders seem to understand how important it is."
"You can't make a strong future without knowing the past." I told him.
"You should take your own advice" Opal whispered into my ear. I kicked her.
"My wife Pema will take you two to your dorms. I'm sure you won't mind sharing."
"Of course not. We have lived under the same roof for eighteen years now." Opal said as we followed him wife. The woman in the water tribe clothes came as well.
"Hello. I'm Kya. Tenzin's older sister. So I need to ask. What's it like being Lin's daughter. I mean I knew Lin since we were little. It must be strange."
"Uh, actually I was raised by my aunt, Su. I just met her yesterday." I told her.
"Really? I guess that makes sense. Lin never wanted a family. I think we were all surprised when Korra told us about you."
"Yeah, you wouldn't be the only ones. Korra and her friends were surprised as well."
"It's surprising. Lin just isn't motherly enough."
"So I've noticed" I mumbled under my breath.
"This we be you two's room." Pema said as she opened the door. I had forgotten she was here. The room was plain. There were a bunch of beds lined against two walls. Clearly we shared with other women. "Dinner will be in an hour. I hope you both like vegetables because that's what you two will be eating from now on." Pema said and she closed the door.
"Friendly isn't she." I frowned. We went over to the bed that had airbender uniforms on them. "Do we really have to wear these?" I cringed.
"It looks like it." Opal said, holding up the top. We changed quickly, facing away from the door. When we were done we decided to go look around. I had read about the northern air temple but I had never actually seen it. As we passed things I would point them out to Opal.
"You know a lot about this place!" A peppy little girls voice came from behind. We turned and saw one of Tenzin's daughters behind us.
"Yeah. I read about it in books. It's so much more impressive in person though." I told her.
"Aren't you my Daddy's Ex-girlfriend's daughter?" She asked me.
"Um, I don't know. Is you Daddy's Ex-girlfriend Republic City's Chief of police?"
"Yep! Do you think that means we could be related? Who is your daddy?" Quite a curious one.
"I don't know who my daddy is." I told her as I bent down to her level.
"How do you not know who your daddy is?"
"My mommy never told me who my daddy was."
"So I guess that means it is possible that we could be sisters! I always wanted a cool older sister. Jinora is so boring. She never stops reading."
"Don't get ahead of yourself. My daddy could be someone my mommy dates after your daddy."
"I still think my daddy is your daddy."
"I'm not so sure. What's your name?"
"I'm Ikki! My older sister is Jinora, my little brother is Meelo, and my baby brother is Rohan!" She really liked to talk.
"It was very nice to meet you Ikki." I said as I stood up. "I guess I'll be seeing you again soon since I live here now." Ikki waved as we left.
"I guess we know what side you get your reading from." Opal said as we walked.
"Hey, you read too!" I argued
"Yeah, but not as much as you do, and I don't get as into the book as you do."
"But not getting into it isn't fun."
"I never said it wasn't. I just don't get AS into as you do."
"Whatever. You are still boring."
"Say's you only."
"Well, one thing's for sure. Bolin certainly doesn't think you are boring." Her face got as red as a tomato.
"I-I don't know what you are talking about?" She looked away.
"You're lying!" I laughed. "It's okay. You two are cute together."
"Yeah. He is cute. I mean, sure, if you say we are." Her face only got reder. I just laughed harder. By the time we were done exploring it was time for dinner. We ate as a nation and we were introduced to the rest of the airbenders. When we were done we were allowed to just rest and meet the rest of the airbenders. It was late by the time we finally got to bed.
We spent the next few days in intensive training. It spread quickly that I already knew a lot about what I was doing. Even Tenzin was impressed and the way he was training us, that wasn't easy to do.
One day I sat with Opal and some of the other girl airbenders listening to Kya who was just telling us stories about when they were all kids. Bumi ran in then looking very worried.
"It's Zaheer. We have to leave."
