Chapter 12

The present

Emma's POV:

"What's the name of your car?" Xavier asks me randomly as we drive to the destination that Landon requested we meet him and Sarah at.

Lan still has no clue that Xavier is my date. If he knows me at all, he should be half-expecting it. Xavier's always my go-to guy for everything.

"I don't have a name for my car!" I snap at him defiantly. He keeps rubbing it in that we're taking his car and that he gets to drive us there. It's so unfair. I love driving.

"Aww, c'mon now, Love, everyone has a name that they call their car," Xavier presses on as if genuinely curious, his thick British accent coming through strong with every word that he utters. I've noticed that the more excited he gets about something, the more British he sounds.

"My car's a GT," I answer him flatly.

"I bet you named your car after me." Xavier smirks to himself at the thought. "That's why you won't tell me," he suddenly says, jumping to his own conclusions. "My girl's name is Sheila," he says the name in an Australian accent.

"You named your car an Australian name?" I question, taken aback. I was expecting something else altogether.

"It's a hot name," he answers simply.

I scoff at that and change the subject. "So, listen Xave, you have to behave tonight," I start the lecture that I've been preparing in my head. I might as well begin the rundown early. "You cannot be crude or inappropriate, okay?"

This girl, Sarah, clearly means a lot to my brother. I don't want Xavier messing up his chances in any way.

"Fine, fine, whatevs. Rest your little head, Ems," he says in an attempt to reassure me. "I'll make sure to be on my best behavior."

I can't be sure what he means by that. I scowl at him but he doesn't see it because he's too focused on the road. "I'm serious, Xave."

Landon doesn't take interest in girls very easily. I would hate for anything to go wrong tonight because of me. He already almost lost her once.

"What a coincidence?" he says sarcastically. "Me too," he reassures me again but his mischievous smile is not doing anything to ease my doubts.

I roll my eyes at him. "I know it's incredibly difficult for you but just be nice."

He takes his eyes off the road to glance my way. "For you," he waggles his eyebrows and sends me a playful grin, "I'll deeply consider it."

*~*~**~*~*

The second we walk in, Xave makes a point of drawing me to his side. I know exactly why he does it, to fire up Lan's temper.

Great start.

Landon's face drops at the sight of Xavier but he plasters on a fake grin, careful not to alert Sarah of his obvious hatred for Xavier. He's choosing to play it safe because he doesn't want to lose Sarah, and I kind of get that.
