Chapter 7 ~ Family Matters

"It's about your father.."
I nearly dropped my phone at those words, those words that I prayed I would never have to hear again. "What about him?"
"He had a stroke last night, he was taken down to ICU. Angel, Grandpa is on his way over now to take you to the hospital, the doctors don't think that he will make it through the night.." This time I did drop my phone, I collapsed on my bed sobbing uncontrollably. Why is this happening to me?!
I think Nate was behind my watching this whole thing unfold because I heard him pick up my phone and talk to my Grandma. "Hello?...yeah, she is...I'm her friend Nathaniel...yes ma'am...do you mind me asking what happened?" By this time I rolled over and looked at Nate still crying. His expression grew grim as he listened to my Grandmother tell him about my father. At one point, he came over and sat down putting him arm around me holding me tight as I cried on his shoulder.
"Thank you...would you like to talk to her?...sure." He then hands me the phone and I take it and place it to my ear sniffling my sobs back.
"Honey?" Grandma questioned softly.
"Yes?"
"I need you to stay calm, he will make it."
"But you told me the doctors think he won't make it through the night."
"Don't believe in what anyone else say deary, this is your father's fight and he will win it if he wants to."
I paused, taking in everything that Grandma said. Maybe he could live, "Can I bring Nathaniel?" Nate turned to me sympathetically and hugged me closer reassuring me that it was okay.
"Why?"
"I just need some support.. from a friend." Another tear ran down my face.
"Okay then hun, I will see you later. Love you."
"Love you too." I hung up and tossed my phone beside me and sighed. Nate nudged me a little and softly smiled at me.
"Everything will be okay, I promise you."
There was a quiet knock at the door and I got up from my comfortable position to open the door. As the door creaked open, I smiled realizing that it was my Grandfather. He smiled back in return, worry filled his deep blue eyes. "You ready to go Angel?"
I shook my head, "No I still need to get dressed and get ready."
"Okay then, may I come in and wait then?"
"Of course grandpa." I opened the door the rest of the way and he walked in instantly walking to the chair in the far corner. Nate was still sitting on my bed but Memory was now sitting in the same spot that I was in previously. "Grandpa, his is Nate and Memory." I said gesturing to them. They all smiled warmly at one another and made small talk while I walked into the bathroom with my clothes to get ready to go.

"Thank you." My Grandfather said to the nurse behind the desk. We started making our way down the long white lonely hallway trying desperately not to full out run all the way to the room where my father lay now. Passing each room, I glimpsed into some of them seeing the patients lay there. Some where sitting up smiling at the people in their room laughing along with them, and others laying cold upon their beds while their relatives and friends crying or desperately trying to talk to them. I couldn't help but feel bad for them, but it only makes me wonder what my father would be like once we get there.
